From the desk of Kjersten Conway, MPR Digital Media Intern:

Play It Forward, the instrument drive sponsored by Classical Minnesota Public Radio and the Minnesota Music Educators Association, concludes on May 31st. If you have an instrument at home that you no longer use, why not step up and pass it on to someone who really needs it? Play It Forward puts your gently used or new instruments into the hands of kids in schools across the state of Minnesota, and in doing so helps to ensure a bright future for our next generation of musicians. Music programs across the state need you more than ever. Your donation will provide a shot at musicianship to students who may otherwise have been unable to afford an instrument or rental. If you have a once-loved instrument collecting dust, please consider donating it through Play It Forward. A list of schools near you and the instruments they are accepting can be found online courtesy Classical MPR.

Donations are tax deductable, and you can hand the instrument directly over to the school of your choice. Could it use a few repairs? Bring it by the school to which you would like to donate - the music department can often get it taken care of or repair it themselves. The instrument will belong to that school and can be lent out to band or orchestra students in need, free of charge. A child's opportunity to discover a love of music should not have to depend on his or her financial situation. With your help, it won't have to. The drive ends soon, so act now!
