Do you expect your news to be hoax-free?

This afternoon's post on News Cut made me shake my head.

Perhaps it's time to change the name of newscasts to hoaxcasts.

Today's hoax-as-news event occurred in Washington where someone pretending to be from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced the organization was endorsing climate change legislation. - an excerpt from Hoax of the day

Naturally, this leads to some interesting responses. Regular commenter bsimon wrote,

Here's the thing: in the news-as-entertainment world, people don't care if its real or not. We just want to be amused.

Is he right? What do you want from your news? Would you rather hear about things as they happen and then get verification, or should the story be completely verified first? Add your perspective on News Cut.
