Join our open discussion: What is happiness?

Posted at 8:20 AM on June 24, 2009 by Julia Schrenkler

Digital Media Intern Eliza Hartley kicked off an interesting online discussion. Inspired by the Midmorning show about the essence of happiness, Hartley opened up the online conversation,

"What makes you happy? How do you know when you will be happy? Are you good at predicting your happiness?"

As always, it is the variety of replies that make a discussion interesting. Some samples:

Happiness is tator tots and boxed wine ... reading my own novels (hee hee HA) and naps and sex and dreams at night where I fly. Happiness is a walk on a nice day to the co-op and seeing flower gardens along the way. Happiness is old horror movies. Happiness is staying far away from family. - Peter Joseph Swanson

happiness is life, breathing in all that is around you and being thankful for it all.- Vivian P.

Happiness for me is a sit-back. Happiness is loving the Luvly Laura, Luvly Dotter and Son-o-Mine. Happiness is bike rides and swimming with grandkids, grilling burgers, steaks and veggies and kickin' back with a Scotch (single malt) and conversation. Happiness is knowing I wrote something from which someone got joy or chills, or from which they learned something. Happiness is knowing I could be dead... but I'm not. Happiness at 67 is being able to do pretty much what I'd like to (except for having to work), and seeing the green side of the grass when the sun comes up. Happiness is... the art of being happy. - Chuck L.

What is your definition of happiness?

Would you volunteer to take less money to save jobs?

If you had the opportunity, would you volunteer to take less money to save jobs? MPR's Paul Tosto asks just that. He explains that Hennepin County's "intriguing experiment in voluntary hour cuts has been extended through the end of this week." and notes that some of the employees sacrificing their hours are sharing their story and perspective on it:
