Cruise down University Avenue

Posted at 8:28 AM on May 29, 2008 by Julia Schrenkler

"Back in the late 19th century, the Twin Cities business community wanted to build one of the grandest boulevards in the world, one that would rival the Champs-Elysees in Paris." - from Laura Yuen's report, The car culture

How many of us would trade the history and flavor of University Ave. for something more grand?

Meteorologist Craig Edwards advises you to phone your friends in Omaha because strong storms are moving in, and notes the path may find their way southern Minnesota. Edwards also points out:

"Lives have been saved by citizens paying attention and seeking shelter during severe weather. Keep your NOAA Weather Radio handy."

Considering the recent damage in Hugo and elsewhere, maybe that's just good common sense.

I'll be featuring some of the replies from our online discussion about University Avenue. Right out of the gate we read about the constant evolution:

"Oh man, When I was a child, There wasn't any other good way to get to Minneapolis except University. It was always a delight to see the neighborhoods change and grow, die, and rebuild itself into something new each decade or so. Foods, Music, skin colors, languages, customs --everything changed over and over. From the scandalous to the Sacred it was all there, the real lifeblood of this part of the urban Midwest." - John Pieper
