What debates define and inspire us?

Posted at 8:42 AM on May 27, 2008 by Julia Schrenkler

Today Midmorning sits down with Howard Fineman, author of "The Thirteen American Arguments: Enduring Debates That Define and Inspire Our Country." The focus is how we're divided, and united, by debate:

Many Americans complain about the partisan divide, but longtime political reporter Howard Fineman observes that we are a nation born to debate. And in his new book, he says we don't argue enough about the founding principles of our nation.

Well I can't argue with that. Although there are any number of events and Internet forums for debating politics and values, what questions drive us to improve ourselves and our society?

MPR's Mike Reszler, Managing Editor for Online News, wonders what you think. He notes some of the questions we the people continue to address, such as:

* Who is an American?
* What is the role of faith in public life?
* What role should America play in the larger world?

He writes, "We want to know what questions you think animate us as Americans. How would you answer the questions these key debates pose?" Join the online discussion and share your questions... and answers.
