The science behind snowflakes

Posted at 5:25 PM on December 23, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

Well I don't know about you, but I just got in from shoveling. Again. Check the current conditions for the area closest to you to learn more about this thing they call "snow."

If you haven't heard MPR's weather podcast Jet Streaming yet, check out this past Wednesday's episode. The December 19 segment description:

Caltech professor Dr. Kenneth Libbrecht explains the science behind snowflakes. Plus, the origins of Christmas and one last batch of gift ideas for the weather geek in your life.

It is probably too late for a weather gadget gift but consider giving a weather-inspired one, like a shovel, windshield scraper or even jumper cables (shouldn't we all carry them?!) might come in handy.

Don't hesitate to contact the Jet Streaming crew with your weather questions.
