Midday at noon: Two lives changed by Pearl Harbor

Posted at 7:36 AM on December 7, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

The course of world history changed because of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, but on Midday at noon we'll hear how two individuals' lives were affected.

Dan Olson sent me an email about his conversations with Kenneth Deans and Carl Nomura, two men with two things in common: Ties to Minnesota and a personal history changed by World War II. Their experiences were completely different. Deans was on Oahu December 7, 1941, a 29 year old man with a wife and a military career ahead of him. Nomura was 19 and living in Los Angeles until he and other Japanese Americans were moved to internment camps.

Musicheads, index style

Posted at 12:16 PM on December 7, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

This week the Musicheads talked about new releases from The Hives, Babyshambles, and Sigur Ros. I always listen with the online discussion up, but I also managed to grab some index-style items:

BANG out of the gate, "It's already working for me, Bill, thanks." - Mark Wheat

DJ nickname mentions: Sadly, none.

Mention of the rock-n-roll lifestyle at 10:14: "This guy is livin the rock-n-roll lifestyle. It's sex and drugs and rock and roll and someone's got to do it." - Mark Wheat [Pete Doherty has it covered.]

My personal favorite quote-of-the-'cast: "I like loose. Loose is good. Loose makes good music. But this was so loose it was going to fall apart!" - Bill DeVille [in reference to Pete Doherty's earlier single, "Beg Steal or Borrow"]

Number of times The Rolling Stones were invoked: 3
@ 04:00 | 13:07 | 15:00 for those of you who like specifics.

Number of times Danny Sigelman mentioned The Rolling Stones in my podcast count: 2 out of 3

Finally: No mention of prog rock this week

News discussion topics for the 12/07/2007 weekend

Posted at 3:50 PM on December 7, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

Don't be caught this weekend without a topic! My notes in italics.

For the first time sex offenders may get life sentences (MPR)
As in life, with no chance for parole. Honestly, if you can't get someone's opinion on this they might not have opinions at all.

Gift Card Purchases Due to Surge (NPR)
Ah gift cards. A present from the thoughtless & lazy or from someone who wants you to be able to choose how you splurge on yourself?

Airlines plan to pack in more per flight (Marketplace)
Overbooking, here we come! The next step in evolution is allowing passengers to sublet their own laps. When was the last time you had an open seat next to you on a commercial flight? Would you take a later flight for a free flight pass?

Share your own conversation-starters for catching up with the coworkers you rarely get a chance to see, while purchasing that perfect "experienced" vintage outfit, or to distract you (and your kitchen helper) while doing dishes.
