First of the month and a Thursday to boot, which gives me two reasons to check the upcoming events calendar. Front and center is tonight's live In the Loop taping, which features the theme, "Why am I spending so much?" The contemplative event description leads me to believe this might be interesting:
"We’re all exposed to big doses of pro-spending messages, but where does free will enter into the transaction? Is shopping a pal or a panacea? And what happens in tough economic times?"
The event itself is free, interesting and entertaining, which means you could take a date (on the cheap) for a revealing discussion starter.
Price: Free but RSVP required. Go to www.mpr.org/rsvp4 [And uh, hurry. -JAS]
Dates and Times: Thursday, November 1; 7 p.m.
Venue: UBS Forum at Minnesota Public Radio

Even if you don't attend, you can interact with the show or peruse the archives.
