Still looking for a holiday menu before Thanksgiving?

Posted at 7:48 AM on November 20, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

I don't envy you if you're still planning your Thanksgiving menu. That said, you might find a little help from The Splendid Table. Last weekend's show shared some good recipes like Apple and Chicken Liver Mousse and Lynne's Fast and Crisp Roast Turkey Scented with Apple and Basil. Lynne even had guest Deborah Madison plot out a Vegetarian Thanksgiving Feast. There's time yet for you to shop and still manage to brine your turkey.

Note: Lynne & company will be available Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET. / 10 a.m. to 12 noon CT for "2 hours of live culinary triage on the day you need it most." Plan to tune in or stream Turkey Confidential, it is the last, best hope you may have to save your holiday cooking.

Featured discussion: Do we buy ethanol because we have to?

Posted at 9:06 AM on November 20, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

Sea Stachura's feature Do we buy ethanol (in Minnesota) because we have to? opens with the following:

You're at this Wisconsin gas station. You're scanning the pumps -- octane 87, octane 93. One pump offers an ethanol blend, E-10, which is gas with 10 percent ethanol. The other pumps contain just gasoline...

...Typically, the gas with ethanol is cheaper because it's subsidized. So which do you pick?

Which one would you buy? Why?

Stachura's report highlights (on a high level) Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri, and Wisconsin's approach to ethanol use. There's a line between encouragement and requirement, and I wonder if we even notice, or care.

There's a buzz around shopping

Posted at 2:16 PM on November 20, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

I notice a pattern in my RSS reader today: Shopping. Black Friday. Purchasing power. Retail's effect on the economy. Each headline blooms before another similar one. I almost don't know where to begin with the theme, but these items stand out:

*According to the MPR homepage: Target 3Q profit off 4 percent, missing analyst forecasts

*On our discussion group Minnesota Life: Priscilla spills her plans for Black Friday - This is How I do it & What I am Hoping to Find while Greg shares his personal take on Tightwads and Spendthrifts.

*Chris Farrell isn't buying: A Cheery Holiday Shopping Season?

Whew. I've still got our Consumed series bookmarked.

Talking openly about college drinking

Posted at 3:44 PM on November 20, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

MPR's Midmorning discusses Drinking beyond limits:

The recent alcohol-related death of one Minnesota college student, Amanda Jax, has brought the issue of campus drinking back into the spotlight. One expert says the problem goes far beyond college campuses.

While listening to the show, I heard host Kerri Miller ask about the culture of binge drinking on campus. It really got me thinking about what defines binge drinking (I'd wager most of us would discover we've had a binge drinking episode at least once) and about attitudes towards drinking in general - beyond the campus and into the home. But to the points I heard during Midmorning:

* Are colleges tough enough on underage drinking?
* What can parents do for their college age kids? For their younger - or older - kids?
* How much is drinking a part of our culture?

Join the conversation online. We have an open discussion about drinking beyond limits, and you can share your perspective on how the media covers these issues in The media is not the message.

Spend some time with the Musicheads

Posted at 9:41 PM on November 20, 2007 by Julia Schrenkler

You can catch Musicheads every Tuesday night at 11 p.m. CT or simply subscribe to the podcast if you're early to bed like me. Host Bill DeVille brings in a couple of other musicheads from The Current and they talk about the latest releases or dig into a classic album.

The conversation doesn't end there. You can join in online - Bill & company check in to see what you have to say about the music, too. Speak up in this week's discussion: Musicheads talk about the music: Radiohead's "In Rainbows," Georgie James' "Places," and the latest from Beirut, "The Flying Club Cup".
