Rabies shots: New and improved!!

Posted at 4:37 PM on October 24, 2007 by Bill Wareham

I got a rabies shot this morning. No, not because I've had contact with a bat or any other potentially rabid critter. It was part of several preventive series of shots recommended for my recent overseas trip. But it's the same shot you'd get if you did get bitten by a rabid animal.

I'm here to tell you, it's not that bad. It's just like any other shot, not the big needle to the stomach that once sounded as agonizing - if not as fatal - as the disease.

I bring it up because in all the chatter following reports about the death of the poor fellow who didn't realize he'd been bitten by a bat there has been a fair amount of confusion about this point. And it allows me to tell you that this evening on All Things Considered host Tom Crann talks to a couple of folks who will cut through this and other confusion about rabies and bats.
