As it happens, I AM Barbara Budd
Posted at 2:37 PM on September 27, 2007 by Bill Wareham
Last night, MPR hosted a reception for public radio honchos from all over North America that I had the pleasure of attending. The best cocktail story of the night came courtesy of Carol Off. She described how she and her As It Happens co-host Barbara Budd were taking a taxi from the airport yesterday and fell into a conversation with the driver that went something like this:
Driver: So, where are you coming from?
Barbara or Carol: We're from Canada.
Driver: I should've recognized your accents. I listen to this show, As It Happens, from Canada and you sound just like the women on the radio.
Barbara: That's us on the radio.
Driver: Yes, you DO sound just like them.
Barbara: That's because that's me on the radio, I'm Barbara Budd.
Driver: You do sound quite a bit like her.
This conversation went in circles like this a few times before they arrived at the hotel, and Carol says she doesn't think they ever convinced the poor guy that they were the hosts of AIH.
