Your challenge: Write a song

Posted at 11:38 AM on August 1, 2007 by Bill Wareham

Heck, we'll even take care of the hard part (IMHO) - coming up with the lyrics. Here's the deal: a handful of folks here came up with this great idea to match up a lyricist with a variety of musicians. We'd document the challenges of putting music to words and hear how the same words can inspire different sounding songs. I've had a chance to hear what Matt Wilson, The Owls and the Roe Family Singers have done with Stephen Burt's words, and I think you'll be very impressed.

You'll get to hear them the week of Aug. 13 on Morning Edition in our Songs from Scratch series. But we also want to hear how you'd rise to the challenge. So, grab the lyrics here, then pull out your guitar, sit down at the piano or fire up Garageband on the computer and see what you can come up with. Then upload your masterpiece here. We'll feature selected submissions on the Song from Scratch site in a couple of weeks.

Now, excuse me. I've got to dust off the drum machine and fire up the Strat. I feel a song comin' on.
