Midmorning: Authors Susan Straight and Atul Gawande

Kerri Miller's 9 a.m. guest Susan Straight draws inspiration from her biracial daughters and imagines what their lives might have been like in early 19th century New Orleans. Straight is the author of A Million Nightingales, just out in paperback. Her previous novel, Highwire Moon, was a finalist for a National Book Award.

At 10 a.m., surgeon Atul Gawande reflects on diligence, heroism, and other requirements for practicing medicine successfully. Dr. Gawande is a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard's Medical School and author of Better.
