The state of state fairs

Posted at 11:40 AM on August 16, 2006 by Bill Wareham

I stumbled on this New York Times story via Polinaut. I'm an unrepentant fan of our own state fair, haven't missed more than a couple in the last 40 years, so I'm glad ours appears to be safe. But the article does make one wonder how long it can stay off the endangered list, even with such modern touches as the Flaming Lips appearance at the Grandstand (Yes, this has an air of surreality about it, but more intentional than ironic. I mean, for unexpected weirdness it doesn't come close to the New York Dolls playing the fair's "Young America" stage in 1974. Now, how did I miss that one?!).

I should mention that MPR has expanded its booth at the fair, and has a great programming schedule out there (details here.)
