The hottest issue in journalism right now...

...is the debate over, well I'm not sure how to put it in a broad sense, but let's call it journalistic responsibility vs. national duty. It's the question of whether the New York Times and other news outlets performed a treacherous (legally or morally) action by reporting on the government's data mining of SWIFT banking transactions in an effort to find potential terrorist activity.

There has been lengthy discourse on this at James Romenesko's site.
And today MPR's Kerri Miller tackled the issue on the Midmorning program, which is available online here. Her guest was William Powers, media critic for the National Journal.
