We're coming up on a very special time of year for 89.3 The Current: our birthday — which, of course, also means its time for another Birthday Party! This year, we'll celebrate our seventh year in the radio biz with not one but two nights of amazing music. Our two-day birthday bash will be held Friday, January 27, 2012 and Saturday, January 28, 2012, at First Avenue in Minneapolis (18+ shows). The lineup features some of the best bands from Minnesota from all different genres and eras. Check out the bottom of the page for line-up information!

For many fans of this new local band, all it took was one listen to Horses to realize the three guys have perfected a blend of psychedelic rock and glam undertones. Night Moves features former members of Food Pyramid, Mouthful of Bees and Battle Royale. They'll be playing the Friday night show. Check out their in-studio performance.

Without a doubt legends in Minnesota and one of the most prominent Midwest bands to gain national acclaim, Low features the songwriting prowess of husband-and-wife duo Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. They'll be playing the Friday night show. Check out their in-studio performance.

Here's a new band this year featuring a line-up you are probably familiar with. At the helm is Dave Simonett and he is joined by four others including Ryan Young and Tim Saxhaug of Trampled By Turtles. They'll be playing the Friday night show. Check out their in-studio performance.

Formed in the musical melting pot of Northfield back in the early 2000s, Tapes 'n Tapes quickly rose to prominence after being signed to XL straight off the release of their debut The Loon. They'll be playing the Friday night show. Check out their performance at Rock The Garden this year.

This songstress has been wooing audience across the country for many years, first during a stint in Minnesota and then during a move to Oregon. She came back to us this year and released the brilliant Golder while maintaining her punk rock project Gramma's Boyfriend. She'll be playing the Saturday night show. Check out her in-studio performance.

A member of the highly regarded Doomtree collective, Sims joined the other emcees in releasing a bombastic debut record with Bad Time Zoo. His lyricism has been met with widespread approval, taking hard hits at society. He'll be playing the Saturday night show. Check out his performance at the MPR stage this year during the Minnesota State Fair.

Considered one of the pioneers of punk rock in the Twin Cities, this trio predated bands like The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. They'll be playing the Saturday night show. Seeing them live at this point is a rare treat as they have only placed selective shows since the late 1970s.

Perhaps the biggest buzz-band in Minnesota right now, Poliça features the vocal talents of Channy Leaneagh (Casselle) and production by both Ryan Olson of GAYNGS and Jim Eno of Spoon. Having only been around since September, the announcement of their debut album Give You the Ghost, due out in February 2012, took the blogosphere by storm earlier this month. They'll be playing the Saturday night show. Check out their in-studio performance.
Maybe I missed it, but I don't see the exact dates of the shows... just a mention of Friday and Saturday night.
Oh hey - Friday and Saturday January 27 & 28th, 2012!
So I am not really clear on the ticket situation, is it $15 per ticket per night or is it $15 a ticket and that gets you both nights? I would think it is $15 per night but just checking to make sure.....
Matthew, you're right -- it is $15 per night.
"Seeing them live at this point is a rare treat as they have only placed selective shows since the last 1970s"
Damn. Always thought there was only one 1970s. Wikipedia, here I come ...
Are the birthday shows All Ages? My 13 year old son (also a Sustaining Member himself) wants to know. If the answer is "No", please read the parenthetical comment above. Hint: 13 year old Sustaining Member. Might want to think about not excluding your Sustaining Members. Just saying.
I also would like clarification on the ticket situation. It seems very ambiguous as to whether the ticket price is for both nights or just one... please elaborate
Age restrictions? My seventeen year old son is a huge Current fan and would be bummed if he were excluded from the b'day party. More info please.
im a huge current fan of the current and im only 16. ive already been saddened by polica's 18+ shows and wish to see them live. Tapes n tapez is my favorite local band and even though ive already seen them live, i wish to see them again. please consider opening the show to all ages so all your fans can enjoy the birthday.
First Ave just added these shows to their calendar and BOTH nights are listed as +18 shows.
MPR you really should clarify this when advertising availability to "members."
Can someone turn me on on how a current member can purchase birthday bash tix??? I just keep going round and round on the website. Are the shows sold out already??
Tim, check out the Tickets section just above the comments, paying special attention to the on-sale dates listed.
Bummer about the show being 18+. I have three kids who would love to go, 10,13 and 16. Not all kids listen to bad music.... and as a parent who goes to shows all the time, it would be nice to let them go to one sponsored by a station they support.
Would love to see a schedule - openers, headliners, set times - when they are set!
Can't wait for the 27th and 28th!
Is it possible that the tickets will sell out during the member pre-sale or are there going to be some held behind for non-members?
To answer a few Qs: 18+ for these shows, working with First Ave it is more expensive to put on all-ages shows and tix for all would be higher if all-ages vs 18+. Rock the Garden in the summer is a member-driven all ages show if you can wait til June!
Lineups listed above is in order of playing each night - Tapes and Polica are closing the shows. Doors are at 7p on Friday and 5p on Sat with bands starting a little after. (Sat we have a curfew because of the weekly dance party that starts at 10p which is why we start so early that night).
Yes - online tix can sell out on 1/5 to members. There will be limited physical tix available at The Depot on 1/5 to both members and gen pub - if you are not a member, be at Depot on 1/5 - or better yet, become a member now!
