Prince - Cause and Effect

Prince

Prince - Cause and Effect

Here's what hosts Steve Seel and Jill Riley had to say:
The tune is like a little mini-symphony of Prince-ness. It's got a few different sections, some that have that classic funky, sexy, sinewy Prince and some with his more rockish tendencies ... come to think of it, that makes it all classic Prince. Except the rock-y parts might be the hardest he's ever rocked, which is pretty notable in and of itself. - Steve Seel

When I heard "Cause and Effect" for the first time, the term "rock anthem" instantly came to mind. The new song will delight your senses and melt your face. - Jill Riley

What do you think?

It's nice to be reminded that Prince can really shred when he wants to.

I grew up in the "Prince" generation and was anticipating this since I heard about it. Great, great song! Love having him back! Let's put UK to shame and welcome him home in style. Thanks, Current, for leading the way, as you always do!!!! You know you get it when even a 50 year old listens to you more than any other station:)_

Love it! I've been waiting for it all day and it was so worth it.

Thanks from The Netherlands :)

GReant party tune!!
cheers from Brantford On

Posted by brent | February 26, 2010 7:51 AM

It really didn't seem like a song at all but just like a collection of what he gets applause for, like the old jazz singer who scats too much ruining the songs but getting applause from smaller and smaller audiences for their vocal efforts.

Posted by Larry | February 26, 2010 7:51 AM

I didn't get to listen as closely as I'd have liked, but what I heard sounded really good. I'll be listening for the replay later! Thank you!

Wow...even better than I anticipated. Thank you Prince and thank you Current!

Posted by M | February 26, 2010 7:58 AM

Its very hard for Prince to displease me but, that was a let down. Felt like a B-Side to the BRILLIANT Lotusflow3r album.

It could be a grower though.

Posted by JW | February 26, 2010 7:59 AM

Wow! The new Prince song was brilliant! It goes all over the place... funky bass, screaming guitars, amazing drums. I love it and can't wait to hear it again.
After 32 plus years of funk rock and soul, Prince is still at his absolute best. Kudos to The Current for playing the song.

I love the hook and the bridging. Great song.

It reminds you of the monumental artist that Prince is.

One of his best in years. Love the guitar work

Posted by Drew | February 26, 2010 8:03 AM

is that it? we set our alarm for that ? he could have wrote this 20 years ago, or while eatting breakfast... not one of his best by no means..but it's a big deal for you guys.. he grace u w/his presence....and ur kissing as my wife said "his ROYAL purple ass"

Posted by daddi | February 26, 2010 8:06 AM

I saw Prince during his Purple Rain concert way back when. So, I guess I'm more of a fan of his older style. You do have to hand it to him for pumping out such original music. But, this really didn't do it for me. I'm sorry, I feel like a traitor saying it.

Posted by Jacki | February 26, 2010 8:06 AM

This song rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Kerry | February 26, 2010 8:06 AM

Welcome back Prince....we are here and so are you! This song nailed it...contemporary rock at its finest. A new anthem.

Posted by TollyC | February 26, 2010 8:07 AM

Quite a few twists and turns... like a musical rollercoaster ride. He's using different sounds and effects from those on the 'Lotusflow3r' and 'MPLsound' albums.

No ode 2 Hendrix going on here at all, as was heavy on the 'Lotusflow3r' album. This is 100% "pure Prince", and he managed 2 iinclude many of his vast musical ingredients.

I really liked that softer section, with the distorted effect on his voice.

His Bass guitar playing, as usual, is perfect.

Guitar parts seem 2 come at U from every direction, and in a wide sonic array.

Pure Prince.

I love this song. I worry though about where(what other stations) it will be played. You can't exactly dance to it. I miss (radio Prince) so much, please play it again

This song is sooooo awesome! I just can't stop listening to it. Prince will always be to me the greatest artist in the world.

Posted by Naija | February 26, 2010 8:12 AM

My 11 year old son and I were in the car WAITING and WAITING for the song to play! It was time for school but he couldn't go until her hear it..."Whew, now I can go!" he said still groovin to the music with a big smile on his face :) Now that's good Music!

I've waited for this Prince song ever since it was announced. It has everything a Prince song should. Funky, rock, ripping guitar, audience noise, and even the original Prince screams. LOVED it! Hope it comes out on an album soon....

Posted by phobos | February 26, 2010 8:16 AM

I loved it! I'm looking forward to downloading to my ipod so I can run to it. I've loved Prince for years and it's so nice to have him back!! Thanks Prince!

Posted by Barb | February 26, 2010 8:16 AM

This is the guy who makes the music I have always loved. The lyrics, the details, unpredictableness, the humor, the variety has overall been AMAZING. Love that Prince let The Current play this first. That said, Cause and Effect was an opening rock song to me. Not a favorite. I crave the funk. Rock is everywhere. Good funk is a tough find and that sound is what makes Prince music original and exceptional. More funk please, dear Prince!

Posted by rn | February 26, 2010 8:18 AM

I'm still sweeping up my face! That's some crazy, kinetic, kaleidoscopic shit right there! I LOVE IT! Prince gets 2 carry my books after class, and to wear my letterman jacket! And a gold star, 2!!

Posted by Robert Stahl | February 26, 2010 8:21 AM

I think this is a really great song! As usual, Prince leaves every other "artist" in the dust. What some folks at prince.org complain about is their own issues, they need to understand that Prince grows musically each time he picks up an instrument. Let anyone who writes or plays an instrument listen, and they will understand what a song is or is not. Great job, Prince... and great job 4 playing this rocking, funky joint! Full of Nrgy.

Posted by Richard C. Ryder | February 26, 2010 8:23 AM

Actually, scrap what i said above, i've listened a good few more times and it is great! That alone shows the brilliance of his trax.

Musically incredible and the lyrics are something to ponder...anyone hear the backwards message 3mins in?

I still maintain it's not much on Lotusflow3r but, Prince is always doing something different so, why compare? Plus i love new Prince (whatever that is) more than the old.

Well, thanx Current and Prince!

Let's see what goes down in Prince land now...

I'm 45. Two of my sons are 14 and 12. We delayed the normal drop off at school so we could test the capacity of the car speakers with the new song. Nice way to kick off a Friday! Thanks for making Minnesota a cool (literally and figuratively) place to be.

Posted by luv4u | February 26, 2010 8:32 AM

Overall I like the song ok. The best part of the song is the 2nd half. The beginning has trouble getting going for me. I think what I want, and other Prince fans want is a guitar-driven Pop song without the gimmicks. I'm really tired of the vocal style that he uses on this song. The multi-tracking stacatto style thing has been done to death - BY HIM. The guitar is great and the hook isn't bad....but just sing. All the Ladies and Gentlemen stuff and the fake crowd noise is old on the 2nd listen for me. Just a simple guitar-driven Pop song with a great Prince vocal and a killer hook.

On a personal note, I think he should release a real guitar-driven album, no keyboards, no BS gimmicks. Put The Undertaker on it, The War and a few other unreleased gems along with some newer thngs like this, maybe a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

back in the day, NOONE was a bigger prince fan. i still dig him, but this song is a CLASSIC reason prince is not a chart topper, not that he cares. its all over the place, full of over production as usual. prince just REFUSES to get a groove and let it be. oh well.

Posted by nubirthgod | February 26, 2010 8:54 AM

Song is ok, not great % nix the crowd cheering please! Its cheesy. The guitar work is awesome. Thankx

Posted by renownd1 | February 26, 2010 9:00 AM

This was bad. Not a comprehensive piece of music. It just sounded like bits and pieces of afterthoughts strung together to form a musical mess. Not engaging - at all.

Posted by Sparrow | February 26, 2010 9:11 AM

Well well, this is no Let's Go Crazy for sure but it's not bad either. I like the energy of the song, it's good to see Prince back in rock territory, this track could have been in the Lotus Flow3r album thought. The live parts are quite strange in the mix.

Thanks The Current for sharing the track, at least there is one radio in the world whose playing some new Prince music and that's pretty cool.

Greetings from Paris, Christopher

I like Prince's music, I really usually do, but this song seems to be confused. There are so many types of music in here. It almost sounds as though he was trying to make a Ween conglomerate song or just couldn't decide which genre he wanted. Also, why is there so much to do about this song. How can he put out on lousy song (the first in years unless I'm wrong) and get so much attention. I'm sure if it was a full album there would be more to dissect and hopefully enjoy.

Posted by daisy | February 26, 2010 9:18 AM

I admit I wanted something a bit different (FUNK Prince, FUNK). But the more I listen to it the more it grows on me. I am an Prince fan/fam from way back in da day and he is my all time 4ever most fav musician.

This would have been great as the Viking's song (at least the music) in my opinion.

Regardless, Prince does and always will ROCK HARD IN A FUNKY PLACE! Love 2 U from ATL, GA. :)

Thanks for sharing it with us. It set off my weekend in a good way. I love community radio!

Posted by The Dawn | February 26, 2010 9:20 AM

It's a grower ... love the middle part of the song. Nice Jam

Posted by Katlenko | February 26, 2010 9:21 AM

This is pretty interesting. I think the beginning is from his show at Coachella a few years ago... and then it turns.... Blitzkrieg Bop? I like that he lets the song open up for a while and the drums and guitar rip - typically the drum parts on Prince's studio pieces often seem to stay in a very basic pocket. Not my favorite Prince song of all time, but the man is brilliant.

Posted by ccschauf | February 26, 2010 9:21 AM

Disappointing. Prince is a musical genius, and his compositions are flawless. However, what seems to be lacking from his studio releases these days is a creativity that's less self-aware. The good news is that Prince's live shows contain none of the self-awareness that make his studio recordings unremarkable and pretentious. We all know and love Prince the musical genius...but he needs to bring Prince the MAN back into the studio.

Posted by Little Wing | February 26, 2010 9:24 AM

It was OK. I am a fan, but I can't say I loved it. As usual, great guitar parts but the song was all over place and over-produced. I really wish Prince would strip it down and perhaps work with another producer to reign in his greatness.

Posted by Swilly | February 26, 2010 9:24 AM

It's horrible. Seriously people...have you ever heard Prince before he lost it (which was around '88)? I still check out everything he puts out, but this is just BAD. The only album he's put out in the last 15 years that even comes close to the genius he used to be 3121, and even that only had 4 songs worth listening to.

Posted by Old school Prince fan | February 26, 2010 9:35 AM

Crap! The verse sounds like Dolly Parton's 9 to 5.
He's still singing in that nasal tenor and the songs is all over the place musically and lyrically. I agree with a post I read on Prince.org this morning. A guitar solo can't save this song.

Posted by Stevo | February 26, 2010 9:39 AM

Thanks for the song Current!! Prince, please try again!
"Cause and Effect" sounds like it was stolen from a cheesy church "rock" band. Try again.

This track is sick!!! and i mean that in a good way,as a die hard prince fan I had 2 get up early just to catch it on time,I have 2 download it now!!

Posted by Lisa | February 26, 2010 9:41 AM

The Prince music that tickles my brain is when he raw, stripped down and funky and/or (i'm not picky) when he carries me off on a guitar piece that has me floating on some funk/rock magic carpet. I ADORE Prince's music. I write this as a plea.... This piece, and more recent pieces, are too processed. "I am here," he states, but he isn't....he's hiding behind layers of synth and computer-generated effects. His raw emotion - so raw we blushed, remember? - is concealed. I miss the man under the layers, the man who showed himself without fear, who shared his human experience - his sexuality, his spirituality, his loneliness, his jealousy, his desire. I'm not asking for a repeat of the 80s; I'm over it & had bad hair. I'm asking for Prince to show up as the man he is NOW. I want to share his full range of emotions - grief, confusion, anger, pride, evolving spirituality, okay, sexuality, too.....whateva. Try me! I hear it ALL in the guitar...the guitar piece in this tune was exquisite....but I want it in the lyrics, the melody. Please, Prince, come back out from behind the layers. Be raw. Be here.

Good Morning "Prince":

"Having" listened to the entire Music of Spheres: Go-Go is so the music, because it is a genre marked by spirited, aggressive action!

When you laugh in a song, after asking a question, I immediately know there is a message: plus, the entire go-go is.

Saying, "I am Here. Where are You?", is an example of Cause and Effect questioning in writing. And, what is enjoyable to me to read, is that "where" is "here"; so essentially, you and the audience is there; but is there awareness to what is being asked?

Genius at your wording, always intrigues me and makes me happy; for "leave no death", is a phrasing most delighful.

"Leave no death" is "leave", because it means: to have what is remaining after one's death.

I tell thee, I can't find true messages anywhere else today; only the ancients write this way.

Thank you for blessing me, a writer, who loves you, again with a masterpiece.

Shall we say: Rock-a-Go-Go?

Wow...

I love you. Having said all that.

Thank you the current for playing his music.

Posted by Love 2 B Free | February 26, 2010 10:04 AM

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Prince from the 80's but haven't heard anything decent from him since. The first half sounds like the 80's, but not Prince, and not the good part of the 80's. The last half sounds like heavy rock from the late 90's and that's where I started to get confused. The track is somewhere between a live concert, a bad b-movie soundtrack, and (like one of the previous comments) a cheesy church rock band. If this is what Prince has sounded like since the 80's then I am glad I didn't miss anything!

Posted by no_prince_for_me | February 26, 2010 10:05 AM

As always, Prince doesn't dissapoint. Interesting as usual. Not an jawdropping song from him, but better than quite a bit too! (and yes, I have dropped my jaw at some of his music. check out his catalog) Lots of energy and the song is all over the place. (in a good way. typical Prince fashion) As with most songs like this, it deserves a few listens to make good sense of it. I will be listening all day and cranking my stereo every time it comes on today.
Thanks Prince & The Current!

Posted by Mike K | February 26, 2010 10:10 AM

I thought it was pretty lame, actually. Particularly the crowd noise. I agree with those above who think that it is not a finished or well thought composition. It would be at home on a "jock jams" compilation and is not up to the standards that I would expect from Prince. It hurts me to say this as a long time fan.

Posted by Cari Ness | February 26, 2010 10:10 AM

Fun!! I have not seen anything from Prince since his performance at SuperBowl, but keep him in my running mix and work out at all times. I hope to get this added to my ipod soon. Prince is one of my top 10 favorite artists and this is really a cool song! Thank you for playing it!

Posted by LadyB | February 26, 2010 10:11 AM

The are few artists that are able to create amazing music in the later years of their career--Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond to name a few. If this song represents the culmination of Prince's experience then he is not one of them. He is a credit to great music from the 80's and has done much for the Minnesota music scene, but with this song and as much airplay as you are giving it I think some of that has been backpedaled. Not that it's the Currents fault, it's us Minnesotans. We put bad musicians up on a pedestal just because they were born here, even if they are horrible (e.g. Bob Dylan). I am glad for what Prince and Dylan have done for the music scene here, I just don't have to enjoy their music!

Posted by whatknots | February 26, 2010 10:16 AM

Just as great as he is! I never get sick of hearing his wide range. Thank you thank you for your relationship with him.

Where am I?

Miles away from this overproduced and sloppy-as-a-White-Castle-slider song.

Prince, thank you for supporting The Current, but please take this one back into the kitchen. It's burnt beyond recognition and is sure to cause indigestion of the brain.

Also, thanks for getting that horrid "wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-Wah HEY! wah HEY! wah HEY!" stuck in my head. I keep picturing a video with idiots throwing their hands up in unison upon every exclamation of "HEY!" So, so, so bad!!!

Posted by Janaynay | February 26, 2010 10:29 AM

It references so many different genres and artists, all in one song. I noticed Led Zeppelin, 70s funk, arena rock, death metal, and Jay-Z/Dangermouse remixing. Any others?

I have been a Prince fan for over twenty years, and I thought this song was funky, Like much of his music the first listen challenges you to a degree, because often times you dont know what to expect. This song along with others over the past few years reminds us (weather you like it or not) that after 30+ years of making music Prince can still create original funky music that sounds nothing like mainstream mumbo jumbo.

The guitar was great, as well as the drums toward the 2nd half. Good rock, good funk. The "hook" is catchy. It had a little too much going on though. I wanted some commitment to a style. Regardless he was rockin' and there's something to be said for a song that just jams. I want to hear it again because his music has the ablility to grow even more interesting the more you listen. I'm excited to see what he does with this, and the next... congrats Current!

This song was very average to me. I dig Prince and have for almost 30 years. I am dissapointed in it. It sounds like so much of what he has done before and continues to do. Get loose Prince, this is just pieces of different Prince era's smashed together in a 5 minute song.

Posted by Steelersguy | February 26, 2010 11:28 AM

That song makes me hate Prince. That was a like watching a busload of handicapped children drive off a cliff. Horrible.

As a huge fan I'd say it's not his best, not his worst. Certainly not even close to LotusFlow3r. I agree, ditch the crowd noise and it's way cooler.

With all of that being said, my opinion is only after one listen. I think this may be one of those songs that gets annoyingly stuck in your head.

Brilliant!!

Great sounding song.

Of course .org-er's are already attacking it here ;)
But they hate any of the Genius's work until 6/7 years have gone, at which point they view it as brilliant.

Well Done Mr. Nelson!!

I feel like I've been missing this song my whole life!. It just seriously hits the spot right now.
Thank you the Current and thank you Prince!

This is a nice little ditty but nothing new or innovative by the great man.
I've heard this in one form or another by Prince.
It might sound harsh but when you've followed Prince since 1984 you have a high expectation.
I don't want Purple Rain II but I do want something that will evoke an emotion similar to what I felt between 1980 -1991.

Posted by Jays Addiction | February 26, 2010 12:35 PM

it's wow

it's finally another song that captures the live exitement of a typical prince concert

thank you

poeki

Posted by poeki | February 26, 2010 1:01 PM

Oh wow this is horrible. Please Prince. Let somebody else produce your music. This sounds exactly like the crap from Rave. Sound quality hasn't improved since then. Lyrics are cheesier than Lenny Kravitz at his worst. I'm sorry - this is embarassing.

Posted by Beau | February 26, 2010 1:18 PM

I WANT!!!!! iTunes??? CD???? Where?!?!?!?

Posted by Rhett | February 26, 2010 1:28 PM

I think there is just a lot to digest in this song. It's one of those that throws you for a loop the first time you hear it. It will grow on people the more times they listen. Prince, like so many artists with true genius, has gone beyond the simplicity of his earlier music, which was much more accessible to the common listener. Some people will go along for the ride he's on now, others won't. But his remarkability as one of the greatest artists of our time is undeniable, and I'm so glad he's still making music!

Posted by Jenelle | February 26, 2010 1:30 PM

I loved the guitar. As usual Prince shows how gifted his skills on the guitar are, but that is where my love for this song ends.
It pains me to hear a song like this from someone who is so brilliant. I know he has a certain style and he likes to stick to it, but he could really blow everyone's mind if he would just step outside his comfort zone for once.

Posted by Christa | February 26, 2010 1:33 PM

Love it hope this means there is another album on the way XxXxX

Posted by Deb | February 26, 2010 1:39 PM

It has it's ups and downs, I always liked the rock side of Prince, but when he starts stuffing to many different styles in a 5 minute song it becomes to destracting, I think he needs to make songs either all funk, all rock, all pop what ever it takes, just keep the flow going stop trying to reinvent the wheel, everyone in the world knows your a genious when it comes to music, just play.

Posted by Frank | February 26, 2010 1:45 PM

I was smilin' all the way. Thanks The Current and Thank You Prince for supporting our lovely local station. It is a rarity, much like yourself, and makes me thankful to live in this frozen tundra.

Posted by Jenna | February 26, 2010 1:56 PM

I think that Princes latest is a very inspiring song. He can do that to a person, I am glad that he has found God and now has a calling. Much better than his old days when he was lost but now he is found!

Posted by Kevin | February 26, 2010 2:16 PM

Yeah, this is OK.

Like the end shredding but lose the crowd "HEY", that bit is pretty cheesy.

Posted by Onan the Barbarian | February 26, 2010 2:23 PM

That was aweful. Wow. What happened to the Prince that I used to love?

Posted by Lori | February 26, 2010 2:27 PM

Love it. Someday I want to Prince to release an album of sick guitar and funk. Something he would cook up at Paisley Park, just hanging out and jamming with guitar solo's, screams and funk. This is what I want Prince, hook it up!!

Posted by LV | February 26, 2010 2:30 PM

Good Song! Prince, Is a Genius... I had to listen to the song multiple times in order to appreciate it more. Upon first listen, I wasn't quite sure what to think. I don't like the Country Twang to it, because it reminds me of some Childrens Special (lol), otherwise... I will purchase the Single or CD it comes from. I would really like a KILLER Ballad in vain of "I Hate U" or "Adore" or someting Energetic like "Black Sweat" or "I wanna be your lover". Just get back to the Basics of what we've come to love about PRINCE. He had my head spinning at 8:30am (lol) but its PRINCE, so I'll live with it. He gets grade: B-

I'm excited about anything Prince comes out with. The man IS MUSIC!!! From a very young age I've been a devoted listener to his music. From the old music his FAKE FANS love and adore. To his on going enlightening songs that his true fans are so excited to hear whenever he's ready to throw at us here and there. You go Prince baby, keep on rockin'. For those that my not realize it. The year is 2010, not 1986 get over it!

Posted by msgoodnightdevinne | February 26, 2010 2:37 PM

Well my two cents here, not bad for an 'exclusive' leak to the current...this is probably just a taste of things to come. I hope he evolves his sound a bit more but this song is not bad at all.

Posted by mommabop | February 26, 2010 3:08 PM

The beginning sounded like it could have been from the Controversy album, loved it. The guitar and funk were good, but the multiple sounds/styles didn't seem to fit together. It started to get a bit long and by the end I was tryng to guess when it WAS going to end.

Posted by stolljr | February 26, 2010 3:10 PM

what has happened to the boogie-move your arse to it-innovative sound from prince that i know and love?! this recent work falls into the categories of work i would hear from the beach boys, katrina and the waves or some other bubble gum popping genre. please look back over your earlier work, mr. nelson, for inspiration. you can do much better than this.

Posted by Rebecca Williams | February 26, 2010 3:33 PM

I was expecting something different...and with Prince I should know better than to "expect"... isn't that part of his point. He is definitely a man of many messages. "Cause and Effect" I took to mean Karma... not so much a religious song, I believe it was intended to be a Spiritual song.
I like his message but I don't care for the song. The song feels as if his vision was there but somethings missing... it doesn't flow. Love the man, just not the song. Now "Somewhere Here On Earth" is a great example of a song that flows...but love it or hate it, Art is Art.
(why does this feel like some kind of test? Lol!!)

This song is classic Prince - edgy, innovative and unique. It moved me.

Posted by Tina Swider | February 26, 2010 3:38 PM

Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Prince is at it again. Awesome. This has those classic elements of past masterpieces and he still knows how to rock. How cool that the Current got to preview it.

Prince is GREAT! It's got an old-school rock feel, with a dash of grunge and just enough of Prince's natural funk!!!

Love it! Can't wait to buy this one!

Posted by Nancy | February 26, 2010 3:49 PM

I've seen Prince literally dozens of times and for a live show, there is no one who can beat him. I've liked some of his more recent music, and try to get into the songs that do not immediately hook me, but the further he veers away from the funk, the less I enjoy what he's doing.

I will probably always check out what he's doing, but I crave the old styles. This song is fine musically and great lyrically, but it doesn't make me giddy as some of the other commenters clearly are.

Posted by Teresa | February 26, 2010 3:54 PM

His name is Prince the one and only...The time for the great comeback is upon us!

Posted by Bobbyc17 | February 26, 2010 3:56 PM

I thought the song was brilliant, I waited all morning for it. I was rocking out in the car so hard I almost needed to pull over. Prince flawlessly put the many different styles together in a cohesive and addictive song. I expected good, and received great. I'm honored that he gave this song to his roots, our humble Minnesotan selves. Yaay!

Classic Prince, aka Controversy, 1999.
The guitars are awesome!!!

Posted by Noel Kuriakos | February 26, 2010 4:01 PM

Granted I've never been a huge Prince fan, though i respect him as an artist and musician. But I thought "Cause and Effect" was rather blah. It's not a sound I've heard from him which was inspiring and proves that he is diverse and versatile, but the song itself? It sounded like The Wiggles and "9 to 5" got hit over the head by a synthesizer. I wasn't crazy about it, but I'll hear it again and try to listen objectively.

Posted by Ryan Parker Knox | February 26, 2010 4:03 PM

Good last 30 seconds or so, the rest is noise and cheese mixed together. Oh dear, 30 years a fan and very near to giving up now...

Posted by notsure | February 26, 2010 4:17 PM

sounds very underproduced, if it was produced right and fixed up a bit it could be a great song, is this the final version?

Has some good guitar in it which is great, but sounds like it was made on a 4 track

Not at all what I would have expected in a song by His Royal Purpleness...and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've been a fan since back in the day of "1999" and am glad to see him stretching his compositional muscles. And this interactive format shows he cares what his fans think and keeps up with the times.

Posted by Ming & Ping | February 26, 2010 4:44 PM

This song may work as filler for his concerts, but not for release. That's for sure. As was already said, it seems like a few different directions, not one fully realized with conviction. I greatly enjoyed his last album. But I can't help but think that the man who gave us PR, Under the Cherry Moon (which is my personal fave), Around the World in a Day, and perhaps best of all Sign of the Times, MUSt have some more great material like that in him, and I know he does, as he's put out many more great albums. But something on par with the almighty Sign of the Times? We haven't heard it yet. I'll keep waiting.

LOVED the chorus and 2nd half of the song after the bridge. I loved the music and guitar and beat all the way through. Filthy.

I did not like the vocals on the first part of the song.

Posted by Lanaya Baker | February 26, 2010 5:51 PM

Truly amazing!
Everything about this song is so perfect, and captivating.
Lots of great musical directions flowing together smoothly & bringing together new and old Prince.

Posted by Jay | February 26, 2010 6:24 PM

I listened this morning and I DID NOT like it at all. I listened again at noon and it didn't improve. I just listened but this time I began it at 1:55 and it's not only a better song, it's a good song.

I mentally block out the part with the girl vocals and it's a song that I would buy. The energy is good.

Hey Current, if you can get P to do the live version, I'll break open my little piggy bank and I'll Support this Program. If there's a video too, I'll throw in my Twinkie money.

Posted by robotEGO | February 26, 2010 6:39 PM

Ah, I wasn't expecting much since Prince hasn't done something new in decades so I'm not disappointed. I will say this..it did go in a different direction than I was expecting with more guitar than the tired (should be retired) R&B roots we heard with say "Black Sweat". In fact, it sounds exactly like some other song with the same hook....something from "Footloose"! Yes! That's it! "Cause and Effect"-Prince does Footloose! Prince has been stuck in the 80's ever since!

Posted by Amy | February 26, 2010 6:41 PM

Not that impressed with the lyric but the guitar is unbelievable as always. I think Prince is the greatest guitar player....period.

Posted by CG | February 26, 2010 6:47 PM

Wow! What can I say that hasn't been said? Fantastic! I totally feel like Prince is trying to say something new to the listener. Same guitar, same rockin sound, but the lyrics are really HEAVY! Thank you Prince. I can't wait to hear more!

Posted by Barb Nelson | February 26, 2010 6:50 PM

Not the best I've heard from Prince. Believe it or not, I found myself thinking about the lyrics from Dolly Parton's "Working 9-5" at one point during the song, but in a much faster tempo.

Posted by c.tag | February 26, 2010 7:32 PM

This track leaves one longing for the "PRINCE" that would throw caution to the wind and leave one amazed by the creative sound and forward thinking of his music. Many "fans" will love this song, but isnt music supposed to inspire and remain relevant with each listen. This is not a step forward into a new age of a REVOLUTION or GENERATION of music. This is a tamed mans attempt to give something to the masses who love him while not feeling as if he has offended God with his lyrics. The Prince of 1978 thru 1993 is dead, long live Mr. Nelson. Where is your fire? Where is your thumping kick drum? Where is Camille? Where is the FUNK! Prince is a genious and has more talent in this finger than any artist in the mainstream today, yet the music is not reflecting it.

Posted by Towhomitmayconcern | February 26, 2010 7:36 PM

Me . . . love it! Prince has a way of penetrating your soul.

Posted by Maryam | February 26, 2010 7:59 PM

Liked it. Think I'd like it more with repeat listens. Love the main hook and the shreddies. Thought the verses broke up the flow of the song...they felt like interruptions and I kept wanting the next bridge to arrive.

Posted by David Powell | February 26, 2010 8:18 PM

Awesome, I think it's great he came to his local public radio station to debut it, maybe it'll push his fans to donate to PRI/NPR!

Posted by Daniel Murphey | February 26, 2010 8:44 PM

BIG F'IN DEAL!!!!!

Posted by s | February 26, 2010 8:47 PM

I've got it: It's sounds like something for a kids' show. "Prince does Yo Gabba Gabba." If you hear it with those ears, it works. I wonder, seriously, if he thinks 'public radio' and associates it with PBS and Sesame Street. Or at least he figured MPR deserved a song that was just "positive" sounding and didn't have a single bit of sensuality to it - because while it's catchy and agreeable, this is one sexless song.

Posted by Epiphany | February 26, 2010 8:57 PM

"Someone" has been listening to his Zappa records again. And that's not a bad idea. A marriage of the two might prove interesting down the road. Not a good pop song...right now.

Posted by Christopher Todd Hogg | February 26, 2010 9:13 PM

It's ok, I really want a raw sounding Prince. To much going on!!! Just record in an old warehouse like you did and stop over producing your music.

RAW and REAL, Leave Pro Tool alone.

Posted by PurpleLogix | February 26, 2010 9:24 PM

Devine once again. Just when I thought Prince couldn't get any cooler he debuts a song on one of the coolest stations. Love Prince. Love The Current.

Posted by DC | February 26, 2010 9:38 PM

I'll pass. It has the same boring, "over-produced" sound all of his more recent works have had. I wish he'd drop the ego, the religious sermons and instead make a stripped-down, radass guitar rock album with someone else as the producer for once! The man is a guitar god. I'd listen to that sermon any day.

Posted by neokyle | February 26, 2010 11:05 PM

The backwards message in the song is "Contracts just make you smaller"

Posted by Luke | February 26, 2010 11:05 PM

Prince likes his criticism to be constructive, so I'll try to be. The lyrics (taken separately from the song) are good and a good idea. The music is kind of disjointed - separate licks that never gel, giving it too herky-jerky a feel. It doesnt flow or have musical connective tissue, so even a good guitar solo just seems to be floating out there in space, not adding anything to the overall experience

Some of his songs have a (this is hard to describe) cheesy feel musically, sounding kind of like what you might here on a 70s kids show (Electric Company, maybe? Reading Rainbow theme?). This has been seeping into his work since the title track from Graffiti Bridge

If he would want to take advice, which he wouldnt, I'd suggest working with new musicians. Not to update his sound, but to rein in any cheesier tangents and help focus the musical brilliance he has. A good example is the new Groove Armada song with Bryan Ferry, some of his bets work since the 80s and it sounds totally like a Ferry song, yet a bit different than what he's done before.

Posted by Jeff | February 26, 2010 11:30 PM

Wow! I have not listened to Prince in quite a while because I just lost interest, grew really tired of his brand of funk, his spacy pointless noodlings, etc.

But this song made me sit up and take notice. Two-thirds of the song was straight-ahead rock -- not what I have come to expect from Prince -- with funky drums and some metal touches. The guitar solo channeled Hendrix for several moments, swweeet, very nice. Then almost a Beatlesque change of tempo and an interesting change of genre before launching right back into the straightahead rock. Good song! I was impressed, but I'd like to read the lyrics. Still, if this is the kind of musical style he's into these days, give me more!

Posted by Raymond | February 27, 2010 12:08 AM

I'm absolutely thrilled I stumbled onto this when looking for an Ozzy link at NPR! I've been wondering when we were going to hear something from Prince.

I really enjoyed this new track for it's very upbeat dynamics and the wonderful blend of a number of familiar sounds found in the rock, pop and funk world. All put together as only Prince could. I give that a big woo-hoo! More, please.

Posted by Daniele | February 27, 2010 2:23 AM

Same as many here: long time purple fan. But this smacks of a one-off, quick throw down. I really dislike the little "joke" he ends each chorus, and the entire song, with: "Buh...buh........buh-bud-uh"; makes repeat listens annoying. Jokes are funny/intriguing once, and less so each time they’re repeated. The guitar work IS awesome; there was a Rolling Stone list a few years back with the "top 100 guitarists" that shockingly excluded Prince (and his compatriots like Jesse Johnson, etc); this proves how irrelevant their lists can be. But for the song as a whole? It's like an inferior version of "Play in the Sunshine" for me; similar drum work to what Sheila brought to that jam, and also had a similar “joke” near the end (bum buh-duh bum bum… bum bum!), which was played AS a joke though. Still: BIG thanks to Prince for sharing even a tidbit of where he’s at these days; his talent, love of music, and creativity just boggle the brain.

Although I think U got the Look, Rock Hard In A Funky Place, and KISS rocked a lot harder. The Artist can do much better.
This is easy listening. Rock needs to blow my mind. This puts me to sleep. Lyrically there's a serious mistake: you can't be both cause and effect. If you think so, you have a serious problem, because you are in a position of 'splendid isolation), that's why Prince says "I AM HERE, WHER ARE YOU.' Well, the people are definitely there, dear Prince. When is the last time you have really played ping-piong with a real person, instead of with yourself? Snap out of it, bro.

X, your brother.

I've given up on going to the org or reading too many peoples opinions about new Prince music. When you have 1000's of people on a forum and they think they know whats best for Prince and start to make suggestions like he should change the lyrics or added this guitar or changed this vocal it gets stupid. I remember back when I was a kids. I would get the new Prince albums and drive around in my car listening to them with a couple friends and we would talk about what songs we like or if we like it better than the last few albums. The world is completely different now. The only gripe about lot of this, I really wish it would be released in FLAC files over at lotusflow3r web site, so I could burn it to disk and play it in car. I don't know if playing songs via Mp3 thru a laptop does songs justice. I can't say really if this is great..only that I still find that I still enjoy the new stuff. I just don't want other peoples opinion to some how shape mine.

laptop speakers also don't do justice. I have some BOSE headphones and can hear a lot more going on in the song. I think they need to go with FLAC files.

Big let down after a week of hype. I'm happy for the Current that his Purpleness has given you his seal of approval, but this song isn't nearly as good as anything coming out of today's new artists. Like many from the 1980s, Prince's best days are behind him.

I'm a huge Prince fan-went to see him at the O2 in London a couple of years ago, but really come on Prince? What was that? I don't mind you singing about your religion, but why can't you sing about it in a nice, funky ballad? Not this pile of twaddle! I think you're a genius...been a fan since I was 16, but sounds like you wrote it in five minutes while on the toilet.

Posted by Jenne Liburd | February 27, 2010 9:23 AM

this song is so corny and bad... just like all prince. his sounds are so generic... and what is up with the crowd screaming in the background? So stupid.

Posted by adam | February 27, 2010 10:23 AM

I have to be honest and say I don't really like it. There are things I like about it, such as the acoustic breakdown and some of the lyrics (stamping your passport with regret...etc). However, I think the arrangement is way too bombastic for the actual song. We all know Prince is a virtuoso, but this just doesn't seem like an appropriate song to show off on.

F.U.N.K. was a better song choice to show off on, and I feel that's why that particular song worked as well as it did (despite the misguided, poor reviews on iTunes). That song had effortless-sounding attitude, "grease," and was totally hilarious. It also sounded very honest.

Cause and Effect is just loaded with too many effects and artificial noises. Because of this, it sounds dated, artificial and forced. I think good Prince music is the stuff that's musically honest. When you put on a song like "Life Can Be So Nice," whether you love it or hate it (not my personal favorite), it just sounds like an artist being completely true to himself. As a music listener and creator, I totally respect that. Even "The Rainbow Children," for all of the beatings it took from the press and fans alike, sounds like an artist being true to himself.

Cause and Effect sounds like it's trying to be too many things to to many people, and for that reason, fails on multiple levels. Just being honest here. With that said, I love Prince and will follow the man until the day I die.

Prince's music has always been leaps and bounds ahead of all the others - the message get deeper and richer with time.

Thank you Mr. Nelson.

Fantastic song. Thank you, Prince.

It's sad to see that a lot of people (especially the so-called 'fams') create a negative atmosphere around Prince. If you don't like his music anymore, just give up & stop sharing your hate. He does what he does, you have got to respect that. (and stop spoiling the fun).

Keep loving! : )

Much praise to Prince for using NPR to promote his music for free. I'm curious though I would not have thought the NPR listenership was Prince's market, though at 51 yrs of age (Prince and me both), maybe 51 is the prime listening audience for NPR and Prince.
That said, I can see why someone younger than I would like the song a lot. So 5 stars. Where do I check 5 stars. Rolling Stone 5 stars!! Please!!

His songs have always been captivating and allurring. It's been many years since i'e have been with him as well as others.and i will continue to support him.The song Cause and Effect. That song can go either way.The title means alot in many ways such as Life Love Eperiences exc.As for him ,He is what he is and i respect that. The song in itself is real as usual.and he gets better and better. So hats off to u Prince. And thank you for allowing us to listen to such an honest and real song.U r what u r, & i think thats cool.
Love ya.

Yes! This song is awesome! The lyrics and guitar solo are amazing! Prince is a genius. He can add anything & everything to a song and make it work. But I prefer just his voice w/o backup singers shouting or at least less. I like the second half of the song better with more guitar. Maybe I am just a purist? None-the-less, I am happy he continues to make music, what a gift to all of us!

First let me say I am a die hard Prince fan. If he puts it out I will buy it. But this sounds like something off the Chaos and Disorder album. Not one of favorites. It would make it on my iPod but it would not be a 5-star.

Posted by Carolyn | February 27, 2010 7:43 PM

I'm sorry Prince. It sounds like an old guy (like me) somehow remembering teenage as the land of cute. Otherwise, the playing and production are brilliant-just don't really like the vessel you put them into. Lyrics sound cool from what I picked up of them.

Posted by matt krause | February 27, 2010 9:37 PM

i eagerly listened, though searching the archives of my musical past I was reminded of that song "cut loose" and I really remain unimpressed. An aging rocker losing his Edge? I hope not. Not much Soul happin'n here either. After 3 minutes into song I heard something, … something happen'n? A fleeting glimpse of possibillity?

Mr. Nelson is and will always be more than most can handle or comprehend. Criticism rolls off this man like simple math off the shoulder of Albert Einstein. If you don't get it, keep your irreverent pettiness to yourself, it only shows your lack...
Cause & Effect is simple, sweet & raw; a proclamation of who he has become here & now w/no regrets, an invitation to accept him as he is... a longing, but no longer a need.
Did you hear him laugh?
There will be more to come... with such a man there always is.

Posted by Elizabeth DeTienne | February 28, 2010 7:12 AM

Overall I think it's very good, the only thing I didn't like was the "HEY" which sounded a little generic.

I heard the song on the radio first and thought, "Huh, sounds like Prince, but different." I really like it.

Posted by Emily Brunjes | February 28, 2010 8:01 AM

@ Elizabeth: What if that math is more complex?

I have a feeling that it doesn't all roll off as you suggest. If it did the song probably wouldn't be chock full of so much. It almost feels as if he's responding to all his whiney fans, and his fans seem to be the whiniest.

Since he goes through "Periods", sort of the way Picasso did, he accumulates fans for each and when he switches up, they whine.

P, locate the "Fan Off" button and press it! Leave mine on, though.

Posted by robotEGO | February 28, 2010 8:49 AM

Has been many years since Prince was a pioneer - an inspiration - unique and unrivalled.. Now he is remembered for what he was instead of what he could become.. The song sounds confused, unfocused, watered-down and a little blunt.. A bit like Prince's career over the past decade.. I luv you P but I am not lovin' this song..

Posted by yournextbestfriend | February 28, 2010 9:35 AM

I was watching vh1 this morning, something I do not usually do. I was reminded of why Im a huge Prince fan. All the music being played sucked. There was nothing that distinguished one band from the next, they all shared the basic song structure, nothing unique about any guitar work and it all sounded the same, really I couldnt handle it because these are the bands that have peoples attention because of great marketing not great talent.

Posted by David | February 28, 2010 9:41 AM

It's OK. It needs "tightening up" in the production booth; it feels a bit discombobulated at times. The guitar work is great but it dominates a bit too much at times and gets noticeably repetitive. Overall flavor of the song sounds like it could have Top-40 potential, but I honestly don't see it lasting as a "classic" like so much of his early work. I know everyone else here seems to think it's the bee's knees, but to me it just seems to lack the effort and polish Prince has accomplished before. It's not a bad song by any means, but it certainly doesn't live up to my expectations.

Sorry Prince. I love most of your work and what you do for music in MN, but this song just doesn't do it for me.

Posted by Rex Schultrich | February 28, 2010 10:14 AM

Posted by Hannes Tea | February 28, 2010 1:36 PM

Didn't like it at the start, but then , it builds into something else!! Loved it, more please, certainly had an"effect"on me!!

Posted by Pauline | February 28, 2010 2:37 PM

First of all, I think a lot of people want Prince to stay in a realm of his Purple Rain days and I am sorry but that is not going to happen. That being said, I think that the song is ok. I am not overly thrilled about it but because it the first song we have heard from him in about a year its good to hear new material. I absolutely love the guitar solos, which I was expecting to love. But I really think what makes me not so thrilled about it is that it seems that the lyrics dont match the melody. If the lyrics were stand alone, I would give the lyrics an A. If the melody was to stand alone, I would give it an A as well. Together it seems out of place. Overall, I like the song but I was just expecting more. I hope his new album brings this sort of energy in a cohesive manner. I LOVE PRINCE and I know he is doing and will be doing amazing things!!

I don't understand the hate or obsessive love for P or for C&E! I find it neither full of overt religious connotations nor do I find it as compelling with driving melodies and guitar rhythms, as in the past. I was a huge fan of P's work until 1995 and then I didn't listen just because life took me away. I didn't know anything about his fight with the record company, etc. All I know is I came back and I really love some of the songs! Cause and Effect sounds tentative, experimental, and unfinished. It seems like P put a feeler out to the public, and got either love or hate for it, It isn't a bad song--it just needs work! P needs to keep writing songs that HE BELIEVES IN! You can love God and still write other people's stories...

Posted by poetcorner | February 28, 2010 9:18 PM

So many people want Prince to go back to some Rock sound, but the sound that compels me is P's mix of R&B/Blues/Funk! That, to me, is his signature--not whether he looks to please all the fans! Just good music! P! Please! LOL

Posted by poetcorner | February 28, 2010 10:44 PM

I don´t care if he does chart music ´cause I just want his music and I´m sure there are more than enough fans all over the world that can´t wait for something new. I hear his music since I´m about 13 and I turn 40 tomorrow and no matter what he does I love his music and don´t care what others think or say ´bout him. And the ones who don´t like him well don´t listen. Everyone should hear what he/she wants and not dismiss others for what they like. Looking forward to his new release (hopefully soon) and will keep on trying to get the things I ain´t got yet in my collection.
Thanks to Prince who keeps doing his thing....don´t stop and don´t care about what some may say you are supported by so much fans....with the best wishes from Germany. Keep on and be blessed.

Posted by sandy mariah | March 1, 2010 11:57 AM

I thought it was terrible and truly don't understand how anyone could rave about this song. I have been a Prince fan for years, typically loving everything he puts out. This song is an overproduced mess. I think everyone is raving about it simply because it's Prince. I'm a loyal fan, but that doesn't mean I won't call a spade a spade. When an artist I love puts out bad work, it is what it is- bad.

Posted by Ellie | March 1, 2010 1:02 PM

It's catchy, and sounds more finished than a lot of stuff he's put out recently. At least there's no featured protegee! Ugh! Not fond of the "rock band" sound of the (maybe) live audience, but other than that it could have some staying power.

Prince can do anything and will still have a large following. He's a Hall of Famer. but what happen to the groove? Good message very positive but.... c'mon man plz enough with these anthemish songs even AC/DC kept a groove in lock position. Good live not so much all the time for studio. It's almost like you're kinda of bored doing the music thing, this is not fresh at all. we still love ya tho bro. K.I.S.S. Tick...tick...tick....tock...oops outta time!. Come on P where is your pride. O.K. the riff is catchy but this is a very poor effort, potentially good lyrics are lost int he mix. I love your complex compositions etc BUT this is just a mess. In the meantime has anyone heard w&l soundtrack previews to Nurse Jackie - just in case you're missing the true essence of P take a listen to their colours and textures and above all else the pride in their work shines through. P we love you and know you can do better, do not ruin your amazing legacy, take some time out , find yourself and come back stronger.

Posted by Funkyhead | March 1, 2010 4:30 PM

This song is a cliche of everything that he has ever done. If I didn't know better, I'd think he actually hated MPR and the Current and unleashed this song upon its listeners as a punitive measure.

Posted by aj | March 1, 2010 6:55 PM

Ouch, another one down the drain...The production has been so poor and lazy for a long time now. Same ole' plugin guitar tones, same ole' keyboard sounds. Great drumming but I am missing that old in your face real quality tones from the likes of D&P and the Symbol album. Lyrics don't add up. As always it has his awesome elements but the mixes are just lazy and hideous even. Its all good though because he has put out soooo much awesomeness that he and Barry Manilow can just hangout and laugh.

Posted by BassOon | March 1, 2010 7:13 PM

You are truly adored for the music genius that you are. But please please please go back to rock/pop with a twist of funk - i am a a devoted fan but I have been unhappy with your music in this last decade. I stopped at diamonds anfd Pearls. Bring back Dr Fink W+L and forget NPG sounds!!!

Although this song was ALOT better then the one he dedicated to the Vikings, I think it needs to be refined. At the beginning I thought it was the live version but it wasn't and it was just confusing. It sounded like 2 or 3 songs mushed together. There are some really cool parts to this song, but I think as a whole the song is WAY to busy. keep tryn' Prince, you're still the man!!

Don't get me wrong, I love Prince, and until recently I was on board with his new direction. I like Dreamer a lot, but this new one just isn't doing it for me. Too poppy, too cliche, and not enough originality. It gives me the vibe of "The Goofy Movie". No thank you Cause & Effect, but thank you Prince for giving the current this opportunity to hear it first.

Posted by Eric | March 3, 2010 1:31 PM

It just seems like to me that Prince is really enjoying his freedom to do whatever he wants, when he wants, with his music, and not have to answer to anyone. Whether anyone likes it or not, if it's good or it's bad, he can just be. How many other musicians can make that claim? I'm happy for him. Much love for Prince, rock on!

I hate this song. Even more than "Purple and Gold". What happened? There's no soul in his music anymore.

I am happy, though, that my favorite MN station got to premiere it. Congrats to the Current! (Now stop playing it).

Posted by Krista | March 4, 2010 8:29 AM

Not only stop playing this crappy song, but PLEASE stop playing "Shark in the Water". I feel like I'm listening to a Disney movie soundtrack whenever I hear either song.

Posted by Janaynay | March 4, 2010 8:42 AM

Wow, what a disappointment. I agree with the “footloose” post made earlier. I wish Prince would go back to his root sound. ie pre-1999. In fact, how awesome would it be if someone remixed his first four albums?

Posted by Christopher | March 4, 2010 8:52 AM

Are you kidding me? This tune is AWESOME! It's probably the catchiest, most accessible music we've heard from him since "The Rainbow Children." It's got that tongue-in-cheek attitude of classics like "Ronnie Talk to Russia" and "Starfish and Coffee," with a driving rhythm to rival even "Housequake."

Admittedly, the guitar solos aren't the most inspired that he's ever laid down, but there's no denying that the tune itself is solid and way hot. It's got that great stadium anthem vibe, complete with chant-alongs for audience participation. Yep. Would love to see this live!

Posted by Patrick | March 4, 2010 8:56 AM

You hit the nail on the head. Stadium Anthem Vibe...that's why it sounds so goofy.
Prince is better than this 'Walmart' syle of song writing.

Posted by christopher | March 4, 2010 9:06 AM

I have never been a Prince fan. I think I have enjoyed only 2 of his songs ever. The first time I heard this song I thought it was kinda catchy, a fun listen. By no means an award winner, but entertaining. The second time I listened to it, I thought much less of it. Very repetitive and the chorus was very 'cliche'. It sounds like something that's been done a hundred times. Sounds like Christian rock songs actually. I still maintain that it's somewhat of a catchy tune, but not very original. Kinda cheesy actually...

Posted by carrie | March 4, 2010 3:24 PM

Ew...I listened to it 5 times to be sure. It's terrible.

Please somebody help Prince. That was awful ! I'd rather listen to Sexy MF 100000 times again than listen to this unfocused mess another time !

Posted by Leon | March 4, 2010 5:51 PM

I just listened online. It's a miniature concert.
I'm even more happy to know Prince is a public broadcasting fan and offered first airing of his new single to your radio station. I would love to see him sit down and talk with Gwen Ifill or Jeff Brown on the PBS Newshour, formerly the Newshour with Jim Lehrer.

Posted by Mary Lawrence | March 4, 2010 6:00 PM

I wasn't sure at first, but after a few listens, now I love it! Everytime I hear it on the Current, I turn it up. Big ups to Prince for giving the song to the Current to debut - it shows total respect from a giant and icon to work with the new school folks at the Current to announce to the world that he's back in MN and rocking again!

Posted by terrance | March 4, 2010 11:39 PM

I have to say, I was let down. While I'd LOVE to see that song played live- I have no desire to hear it again on the radio- or purchase it for my ipod. I was hoping the song would be something more "radio friendly."

Too bad the song was pulled; it represented a lot of years of experience in a compact package. Great guitar work and message.

Thank you, Prince, for sharing with all of us...

"I'm sick and tired of being tired" of folks expecting artistic expression to sound Black or White. Why would one pin those limitations on a drawing, sculture, or painting?

Expression knows not time, matter,or limitations of space. This song has the feel and energy of retro Prince...yet captures the essence of his intrinsic expression, as it translates a current universal message.

In my interpretation...as energy flows...regrets only serve as clutter that clogs up the potential to achieve harmony and balance in the stream of things.

Thanks Prince...maybe you'll come to the small town of Charlottesville/Albemarle County Virginia some day soon. I'd like very much to meet you and your creative team. My children (now grown) and I still enjoy your creative edge...we've enjoyed your music for years.

Not good....not good at all.

I Love Prince and will always love him. But, I am not feeling that song. Maybe it will grow on me later.

It reminded me of housequake. That record is one of my favorites! I liked the song. It has curious moments that make me want to listen to it over and over. Prince, you are creative and never stop exploring music and your capacity to play guitar.

Prince is my favorite musician but this song is a mess. Sections feel shoehorned to one another. The solo is really crappy, considering it's Prince who's playing. Unfunkiest Prince song ever.

This is aimed at the "Glee" Generation and lacks all of the artfulness of the best of Prince whatever genre he chooses to put his hand to.

Anyone disappointed that Dolly Parton didn't come in for the duet during 4th verse that begins with "if had the chance to do it all again" This is clearly right out of the Prince penned 9-5.

Loved the vibe with this song. This webcast is the first time I've heard it and it's catchy. I'll be singing the chorus to myself today. I'm very glad to hear some new stuff coming out from you. You've been away too long!

I LOVE it! :) Loved it the first time I heard it, then worried that the "all-over-ness" of it would get old after a few listens... but NO! I pump it louder each time I hear it! I really dig the change from rockin' to sexy and back again.

Lots of love for Prince and The Current!!

Gives me the same feeling I had years ago when seeing late night shows at Paisley Park when I would just stand, stare and listen while everyone was jumping around me. So good. Thank you for playing it.

I absolutely love this song. I've been a fan since his very first album came out and I am totally amazed that his new song sounds so fresh. Prince, you've been the soundtrack to my life and I hope that we will enjoy your music, lyrics & opinions for a long time.

A "God bless" from the Netherlands 2 U.
