New Prince song to debut Friday at 7am - exclusively on The Current!

Posted at 8:23 AM on February 23, 2010 by Jim McGuinn (59 Comments)

"I am here... Where are you?"

Every week the programming team at the Current is asked for our opinion on new music by local artists. "Is this song appropriate for the station? Will we play it?" And so on. Rarely do these questions come from the one local artist who has sold more than 50 million albums in his career, but last week it did when Prince's rep called to offer The Current a new and exclusive song. Having already demonstrated his support for the station by joining us at our 5th Birthday Party last month at First Avenue, we were blown away that he wanted to give 89.3 The Current a song to World debut. And even more amazed that it mattered to him if we liked the track or not!

The song is called "Cause and Effect," and it's a rocker - filled with virtuosic guitar work, explosive drum breaks, a poppy chorus, trademark shrieks and whoops, some intriguing lyrics ("if I had the chance to do it all again / I wouldn't change a thing except my next of kin") and a call to mankind ("you need compassion"). Opening with Prince's classic pop smarts, the last minute of the tune swerves into a propulsive minor key guitar/strings/drum workout like we haven't heard from him in years. Whether it's listening to all that Radiohead and Vampire Weekend on 89.3 while tooling around Chanhassen or the inspiration of being in Minnesota after several years of living in LA, it seems clear that Prince wants us to know that he's back, he's recording, and from the sound of it, and he's inspired to create the new Minneapolis sound and start a new chapter in his amazing career. It's not known whether "Cause and Effect" will be the first peek into a new record or just a one-off gift to the listeners of his favorite local public radio outlet, but we're proud and honored to debut it Friday morning around 7am with Steve Seel and Jill Riley.

Incredible! This is why the Current is like no other station.

he is like no other performer in so many ways but his love of MN and the way he gives back to us time and again is trully amazing.....

This is fantastic, but I wish it wasn't happening so freakin' early. Many of your listeners are in different time zones. That's like 5am for me!

Love it, though :)

This is one reason why I have pledged support for this station. For Prince to chose The Current is a testament of their appeal and dedication to music in the Twin Cities. I can't wait!! :)

like he's always said to any media outlet when he chose to open up to them- MN is like nowhere else in the U.S. - let alone the world- & the Current reflects how we feel about music- openminded & funky! Hope Prince & his band tour soon- & make sure at least one night is at the new Twin's or Gopher's stadiums- that is about the only event that could rival U2's!

I hope P goes on tour & makes another appearance @ the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, SC, I'm still buzzing from the Musicology Tour....I'm jacked & can't wait til Friday!

Another crappy song .Prince is a great musician but his song writing and production skills are really really really bad.I mean really.

had to add this- is there any doubt that Prince had the GREATEST Super Bowl halftime show except for the best when U2 did the 9/11 tribute? Prince can only be EQUALLED as a live performer NEVER SURPASSED!!

Posted by MJ Goldman | February 23, 2010 6:37 PM

this is cool of him,

although being a fan of the Texas band Fair to Midland, this is not the 1st time a band aired a "World Premiere" song from a local radio station. Last October Fair to Midland allowed 93X to air a brand new song of theirs. So it's not like 89.3 is the only station that has done something like this before.

Posted by Kyyle | February 23, 2010 9:32 PM

Thrilled! I used to go to Paisley Park back in the day, really sometimes till dawn!! My daughter's name is Paislee. Thx for the influence. Can't wait for the new tune :)

This is awesome! If only I could pick up this station, I could start my friday morning off right, with P.....I know the people of Minneapolis will B..

Posted by jess | February 23, 2010 10:52 PM

Now that's a Funky Friday...miss ya JMcG..
Hey - Thusday is the 5 year anniversary, innit?
Wow...from the bunker (V1.0) to a Prince exclusive...

Posted by ObifromXPNland.. | February 23, 2010 11:48 PM

Love Prince, live in Australia so will have to tune in to your online feed (11pm Brisbane time).

BTW, Kyyle... musicians have been debuting new songs on local radio since the dawn of time. No-one is saying that Prince did it first, but how it's unusual for an artist of his incredible stature to do it.

How many records have Fair to Midland sold? Slightly less than 50 million I would guess.

Posted by Stephen | February 23, 2010 11:50 PM

Wow this is great! I'll be listening online since I live in Richmond, VA.

Posted by Jason Day | February 24, 2010 12:01 AM

Stephen,
The on-air comments about it made it out it out to seem like it will be the 1st time (which for Prince, perhaps it will be, at least in a few decades).

My point is, a band who actually isn't even local in Fair to Midland just did the very same thing on another local radio station just a few months ago.

So if 89.3 gives the impression, that at least I personally got from the on-air comments about it, that they're the only station in this market that lands "world premieres,"(from any artist, but lets' just say NON-LOCAL in this case) than that is obviously not true.

I CAN'T WAIT !!! GOOD WAY TO START FRIDAY ! : )))
GOTTA REDEEM FACE FOR THAT UM...fight song

I am very pleased with a new song and look forward to listen to it in Lotusflow3r.com.

I will back Maikel comments about the lack of recent DVD material:
Even though we know Prince's feelings about concerts, live recordings, it's true that a lot of us think that there is not enough commercial DVD's.
It's a pity for example that Musicology tour was never released on DVD, since it was professionnaly shot.
21 nights shows in London would also been great to watch on DVD. And where is the Montreux DVD, these 2 concerts were awesome!

When I go to my favorite record store and check Live DVD's about Prince, there's nothing there except a Hit video DVD, and the 2002 Alladin Las Vegas live. That's pretty far from where Prince is now. That was 8 years ago.
There's a brand new generation of music lovers out there, and there's very few about Prince recent work available, apart from CD's.

Don't get me wrong I am not moaning, I am just taking the opportunity to express a feeling I have, and a fact that I hardly understand.

Lotusflow3r.com: attention!
There seems to be a breach of security there (reported by FF). The site is now classified as dangerous to visit.

Anyway, to finish on a positive note, I will be listening to the new track, and I am delighted by the description so far it sounds promissing. I am also curious at hearing the new drummer (Chris Coleman) play live, and I wonder which bass player will pair him.

I hope an album announcement will soon surface. "Cause And Effect" seems like the good old "single" preview from a forthcoming album (hopes here).

how very exciting! congrats to the current. it would be unbelievable if it had the immediate impact of erotic city, kiss and his best songs, but if it sounds like the vikings song he just put out, i won't be disappointed either.

congrats to the djs on the current for impressing one of the greatest musicians the world has ever known. i'm confident he's doing this because he actually listens.

Mr. Prince Rogers Nelson always does what he feels is right. Right thinking no matter what. Right feeling no matter what and that makes the difference. You go with the flow of everyone else OR you can be yourself and do what you came here to planet earth to do. Everybody has a talent but we tend to forget that talent for the system of money. If everybody lived their talent in doing their talent - then everybody would be automatically taken care of with every need ever asked. It's the divine energy of love and the flow of knowing what is right and with discipline, hard work and fun it comes out right. I am very happy he has this song, "cause and effect" for even the planets have a cause and effect in the whole of all. Even your soul in the "kind" or "uncompassionate" deeds you choose equals out to the "cause and effect" in everything.

Thank you.

What is The Current doing in exchange for this? While it's pretty cool because it is Prince, what if the big label guys wanted to push the new Black Eyed Peas song? How pysch'd would you all be about that? Is The Current compromising its mission? Is it selling out? I'm not saying it is, but is it?

i will be listening in ARIZONA!!!!

It seems Prince has wanted us to know "he's back " for over two decades. I'm a huge prince fan, I just danced my 3 year old daughter to sleep tonight to Automatic and I bought everyone of his albums. How many Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic albums can we take, though. Prince seems to have lost touch. I hope his masturbatory Vikings' Anthem creation is no sign of what's to come with this song.

I always give Prince the benefit of the doubt when I hear he has a new song or album coming out and this time is no different. Prince please don't disappoint this time.

PRN: I really hope it's worth a listen. Last couple of albums have been a complete waste of time. Planet Earth... seriously? Has your ear gotten that bad? 3121... "Black Sweat" was the only song that had any merit. Don't get me wrong, I've been a huge fan since '79. I've found your work to be an integral part of my life. And the older stuff will continue to be such. However, the last few years have seen a steady decline. The work has lost focus, grit and substance. If you're going to clean it up, I have no problem with that. But you should be able to continue to write and perform what should be considered "art" not just music. "Condition of the Heart" is a song that does not have any profanity and I'm sure does not violate your new ethos.Yet it is without a doubt a fantastic song. The harmonies, the crescendo, the PASSION in that piece is on a level beyond most musical artists entire career. So I'm not advocating you go back to your old ways in terms of the ethics that you may have a conflict with. I am asking that you not just push out material for the sake of making more stuff. It's beneath you. Edit yourself. Ask if it really is something worthy of your talent. If you have any doubt at all, then by all means just don't bother releasing it. It taints your image and your quality. Worst of all it makes me not trust your judgment and not care if you do release anything new.

Prince is a Master! He's been going for so long. He's not just multi genre he's multi generation. Prince almost changes character every 6 years. I understand the points of view for those who said he lost it, but a man of so many persona's is going to have different energy when creating. His music energy has significantly changed since becoming a Jehova's witness. Instead of being the edgy maverick who played with our perception he's became the nice guy you could invite to dinner and chat with your mum. He music power has not diminished, though his energy has changed. That is normal for someone who has been alive as long as him. And we all change, so we don't listen to music in the same way as we get older. Why am I stating the obvious? Well I suppose I get fed-up of people who react to this as Prince's fault! Yeah - for me Planet Earth was only 50% excellent 50%Average, but MPLS Sound and Lotus Flower were bang on. Rock for those who wanted more Prince guitar and 80's vibe for those who kept on complaining that he 'don't make music like he used to' - the only thing missing was his filth! ;-)
