Last month at the 10,000 Lakes Festival near Detroit Lakes in Minnesota, I sat down with Craig Minowa of Cloud Cult. As the main singer/songwriter/composer in the group, we invited him to nab our airwaves for a bit as he selected the songs he wanted to hear for Theft of the Dial. Like most Theft of the Dial sessions, Craig picked songs from all over the musical spectrum, but the one thing I noticed was that, as a listener, you can hear the influences of all the songs on the Cloud Cult sound. From the introspective XTC and Kate Bush to the bombastic Janes Addiction and sonically intense Peter Gabriel to the light, dancey Frank Mills and Tom T. Hall, you can hear how those pieces fit together to impact Cloud Cult's music.
Song list:
1. Cloud Cult - No One Said It Would Be Easy
2. XTC - Dear God
3. Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
4. Jane's Addiction - Chip Away
5. Peter Gabriel - Passion
6. Frank Mills - Music Box Dancer
7. Tom T. Hall - I Love
8. Cloud Cult - Love You All
Loved the last CC song!
Yes! Isn't that a great way to end the set. The other thing I noticed is that "No One Said It Would Be Easy" starts the Feel Good Ghosts album, and "Love You All" ends the album. Clever!!
Great stuff. Loved the Jane's Addiction track... Craig was right, I hadn't heard that one anywhere before, much less on the radio!
The Tom T. Hall song brought a huge smile to my face and I couldn't help but hum along. Never heard it before, but I loved it. Thank you!
I really liked hearing Craig on the radio this morning. I enjoyed the song playlist, I have most of those songs in my ipod too. Thank you 89.3 for giving us "theft of the dial" for some local flavor.
Thanks so much! I have been waiting to hear this since I saw the post on MPR as "upcoming"! I always wonder what the musicians themselves listen to, to inspire them or just songs they like! :)
really love these guys! He played Jane's addiction. Awesome!!! If I have ANY criticism of the Current, it is that some, really great, but, heavier older tunes get ignored. Great song list with this "theft".
2nd song at their Cabooze show on 8/23 was Love You All. The lyrics are so meaningful, and maybe multiplied since Craig and his wife are about to have a baby, and I was standing behind Sean's parents for the gig. It was a poignant moment...
