Arcade Fire on SNL

Posted at 4:16 PM on February 25, 2007 by Jill Riley (11 Comments)

Saturday Night Live used to be such a HUGE part of my week. I've started watching it again lately and noticed this season SNL has featured a lot of great indie music. Oh, and the hosts have been really good lately too. March 3rd the host is Jake Gyllenhaul (did you know he dated Jenny Lewis at one time?) with musical guest The Shins.

In case you missed Arcade Fire on SNL last night.....

Keep The Car Running
What is that thing she's playing? Or cranking I should say.

I thought the sound kind of sucked last night... vocals were too quiet.. but otherwise it was great.. I actually like most of the current cast, especially Fred Armison (and he used to be in Trenchmouth!), Andy Samburg and Maya Rodulph..

I was having issues with the mix as well. But blame that on the SNL sound guys I guess?

Yeah, i would imagine.. other than the mix, it sounded huge! I have always thought the singer sounds a lot like Ian McCulloch from Echo & the Bunnyman.. Last night solidified that for me..

oh and i think the instrument is a lira(?) a crank driven hurdy-gurdy... (???)

Did anyone decipher the message encrypted on Win's guitar during the first song...you know the, the guitar he smashed at the end of the song.

I like Arcade Fire, but that guitar smashing was the weakest wuss rock posture I've ever seen.

Win's guitar said "sak vide pa kanpe"

which aparently is a Creole proverb, meaning "an empty sack cannot stand up"

Supposedly referring to the injustice in the lives of the Haitian working poor and the hope that they maintain despite their struggles.

as for the smash, i coulda done without it too, but i don't think it was pre-meditated prior to starting the song. Win seemed genuinely frustrated by breaking a string towards the end, then breaking off a few more before smashing it.

and yes, definitely a Hurdy Gurdy

I was entirely pumped to see this episode because of both Arcade Fire and Dwight (as he will always be known ). For me, Arcade Fire is one of those bands whose songs take many listens to appreciate or are so powerful and emotional I get goosebumps each time I hear them. I would have loved to hear Neighborhood #1 or #3 which fit the latter description for me, but I was satisfied with what they played on SNL which definitely fit the former.

And who says that SNL is on a downward slide? I laughed til it hurt at this skit (can I link?)
