Anvil drops by for a chat

Posted at 11:22 AM on May 8, 2009 by Euan Kerr

Steve 'Lips' Kudrow (above center with Robb Reiner left and Glenn "G5" Five on the right) says it's the break he's been waiting for since the 1980's.

He and his life-long friend Robb Reiner have been rocking hard since they were teenagers together and are recognized by those who hold these things sacred as being a seminal force in heavy metal music. Their band Anvil, with Kudrow on guitar and vocals and Reiner on drums has produced 16 alnums over the years, most recently with Glenn "G5" Five on the bass.

However unlike the bands who they shared stages with in their younger days, the Scorpions, Whitesnake, and Bon Jovi amongst others, they never hit the big time.

Having played huge festivals in the past, they were left playing bars in their hometown of Toronto, although Kudrow says he never lost the faith, and his belief that the guy in the bar deserves every bit as good a show as the fan at the huge rock festival.

Things have changed though since a former roadie of theirs, Sacha Gervasi, who is now a Hollywood writer, told Lips he wanted to make a movie about the band. "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" has become a word of mouth hit on the circuit, helped by raves from the New Yorker amongst others. The story of Kudrow and Reiner is inspiring, tragic, and a testament to artistic dedication (even if you hate the music.) It's pretty funny in parts too.

The band will play after the 7pm show at the Uptown Theater in Minneapolis tonight. Kudrow calls the film "the best support we've ever had.

We'll have an interview on the air this evening.
