For the last few days I have been bumping around old haunts in my home town of Edinburgh in Scotland. It's always fun to see what things have changed and what is still the same. Some of the movie houses where I spent a lot of time in my youth have split into multi-screen palaces, which is mind boggling given they weren't that big in the first place.
Another mindbender is catching up with, and back on to, the myriad of cultural references, which spew out of the telly and into the real world here. It really seems that people here talk much more in terms of films. And not just new movies either. I hear jokes filled with "Reservoir Dogs" references, and Jake and Elwood aka the Blues Brothers are still icons here.
This Hollywood stuff is just a layer in a huge cream trifle of history and societal norms. I find myself missing it once again.
Anyway, I am off to the north and the Islands for a few days, so I will be away from a computer. I will return next week to sample the new layer of "Monsters vs Aliens" cultural references which will no doubt have been added to our media sodden lives.
