Now I realize the movie was made in Canada, and Robb Mitchell over at the Screenwriters Workshop says screenwriter Kenneth Rance used to live here. However even a quick glance at a map would show that New Ulm where the film is supposedly set is in southern Minnesota.
The plot is basically how hard driving Miami exec Lucy Hill (Renee Zellwegger) gets sent to run a butter plant in New Ulm. She discovers it's cold and people don't wear high heels in the snow, but it's ok because she meets the man of her dreams.
There was an event at the Mall of America the other night where Harry Connick Jr. the New Orleans native who plays the afore-mentioned New Ulmer man of dreams in the film, said he hoped to visit the town some time.
Now, while I don't expect folks round here to get as upset as apparently some folks in Mumbai did about "Slumdog Millionaire," but I am intrigued as to how this cinematic epic will do at the Minnesota box office. We also have to ask if after making two films supposedly set in the North Star State, but shot elsewhere ("Leatherheads" being the other,) will Renee ever actually step in front of a camera here?
Here's Harry singing for another romantic comedy of the past.....
