Immersed in Dave McKean's world

While I was able to talk with Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman when they came through the Walker a while back, it was only last night that I was able to sit down and watch their 2005 collaboration "Mirrormask"

The term visual feast is sadly overused, but it is for films like Mirrormask where it should be reserved. Dave McKean's famed design skills move effortlessly into the world of film and he fills the screen with with stunning images. The scene with the monkeybirds being chased through the heights of the fantastic city is just breathtaking. (You can find a range of images from the film here.)

The film took a month to shoot, and then months and months to finish with all the special effects. However while it's been done on a relatively small budget, it's much more satisfying than some of the other recent CGI behemoths, like the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
