The Greil Marcus Epiphany

One of the many wonderful moments during the Fakebook presentation at the Fitzgerald Theater last night, was rock critic Greil Marcus relating how, after years of pondering about Bob Dylan, seeing Toff Haynes "I'm Not There" resolved two major issues for him.

Marcus says he had never understood why there had been such a fuss about Dylan going electric as he so famously did at the Newport Festival, nor how Dylan became 'born again.'

Marcus said seeing the raw emotion portrayed in the film as Cate Blanchett rips into the electric set revealed to him the angry glee on the part of Dylan, and the even angrier response from the crowd who felt betrayed philosophically and insulted, if not physically assaulted, by the stage show.

Then later he said seeing the Dylan character portrayed by Christan Bale singing in front of a cheesy evangelical group chrystalised his realization that Dylan needed to make a move like that to a group which really wasn't interested in who he was, to escape the trappings of fame and feel truly free.

OF course we still don't know if Dylan has seen the film yet.

And the Mekons were pretty darn amazing too.
