Independent Spirit Awards love "Juno"- and Eska

While the voters are very different crowds, the Independent Spirit Awards are often seen as an indication of what might happen at the Oscars.

Last night the Spirit folks went for "Juno" in a big way, awarding it best picture, Ellen Page best actress and Diablo Cody took best screenplay.

Intriguingly "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" did well too, taking the best director award for Julian Schnabel, and best cinematographer for Janusz Kaminski. The film and the book are both extraordinary and worth checking out.

And it looks as though the young Texas director Chris Eska didn't hurt himself through the trip to the frigid Twin Cities in January looking for Spirit votes. His film "August Evening" took the John Cassavetes Award for best film made for under $500,000. It's another film that should be on any movie buff's 'must see' list.
