Singing the praises of "Jack and Rose"

Posted at 1:48 PM on January 21, 2008 by Euan Kerr

"The Ballad of Jack and Rose" snuck in and out of the theaters back in 2005. It got to the top of our DVD pile last night.

It's a Daniel Day-Lewis Catherine Keener drama set on a New England island where Jack (Day-Lewis) a transplanted Scot lives with his daughter Rose (Camilla Bell) on what was once a commune.

Jack has tried to maintain the ideals of self-sufficiency, and lives what seems to be an idyllic life with Rose. However she is growing older and he has heart disease, and he realizes he needs to make some changes to prepare for when he is no longer there. He invites his lover Kathleen (Keener) to move in with her two sons, Rodney and Thaddius. Rose is not happy, and a series of events lead her and Jack to confront some uncomfortable realities in their relationship.

Day-Lewis is always worth watching on the screen, and his portrayal of a once principled man, who has to make some uncomfortable practical decisions to bring his daughter out of isolation is both intriguing and discomforting.
