Everyone deserves a Red Balloon in life

Do you remember the first time you saw "The Red Balloon?"

I must admit I don't.

It just seems Albert Lamorisse's fantasy about a boy who finds a balloon floating through the streets of Paris (or does it find him?) has always been part of my consciousness.

I know for sure though that I saw it in a movie theater, and remember being captivated by the simple story.

I also remember being mystified at how the balloon apparently had a mind of its own.

This weekend there's a chance (rare nowadays) to see the piece on a large screen.

The Oak Street in Minneapolis begins a run of a remastered print of the 1953 classic, along with another Lamorisse film "White Mane." It tells the story of an apparently untamable stallion.

Total run time for the two together is about 90 minutes, perfect for anyone wanting to introduce a young friend or relative to the delights of a really well made film.

And I am curious: do you remember the first time you saw "The Red Balloon?"
