So I'm watching "Atonement" in a packed movie house the other night, as the movie is approaching its dramatic climax. It's one of those moody movies, where the characters stand in silence and stare meaningfully at one another.
There are long periods where there is no music at all.
Except that there was. Suddenly my ear catches a beat and a couple of indistinct notes. I can't make out the tune, but the tinny snap of the high-hat is unmistakable - and inescapable.
I tried to focus on the film, but that music kept vying for my attention. But where was it coming from?
I was never able to pinpoint it.
It was only after a while that I realized it was someone's iPod or MP3 player, probably in a bag or a pocket, which had been bumped enough to start playing. Perhaps the owner had become deaf from listening to too much loud music over the years, but the music didn't stop for several minutes.
The challenges of modern movie going!
