After all those years of struggling and cursing at balky VHS tapes, it's a little wacky to feel nostalgic about them. However this article by James Hebert of the San Diego Union-Tribune is an apt reminder of how the clunky video changed the movie experience. The timeline is particularly interesting.

Stanley Kubrick died eight years ago, but his influence lives on, not least through the work of Sam Spiczka. The Sartell-based sculptor just installed his piece "Kubrick" at the Rochester Art Center, where it will remain for a year.
Spiczka says he as inspired by Kubrick's nuanced view of nature in his films.
As he says in his artist statement: "Kubrick is one of my favorite directors. In his movies, the most rational laid plans of men always unravel due to a fundamentally chaotic, uncontrollable reality. With this sculpture, I tried to give physical form to that eternal struggle."
You can read more and see pictures of the installation on the International Sculpture Center's on-line forum.
