Guns: The fine folks at the Minnesota Historical Society are combining cinema, history, and Strib film critic Colin Covert for a program called "Ginger Rogers with a Gun." Covert will join historian Doug Rossinow to show film clips and discuss how Hollywood became partners with Washington during World War II to help the war effort. The Tuesday March 27th program begins at 7. It's part of Minnesota's Greatest Generation Project.
Rockets: Here's an interesting combination of public art and cinema. A Minneapolis group including the public art advocates Forecast is remodeling the Brackett Park Rocket, a former playground structure into a sculpture. The final piece will be installed later this summer between Seward and Longfellow neighborhoods.
It's going to cost some dough though, so this weekend they are holding a fundraiser where they will display the model (partially pictured right) and show the Jake Gyllenhaal breakthrough movie "October Sky" which is all about rockets. The show is 10.30 am Saturday at the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis. Tickets are $12 for adults, $3 for kids.
