A hope dashed

Well, I guess I have the answer to my hope that Eddy Murphy would build on his work in "Dreamgirls," to re-establish his career. "Norbit" was not the response I was looking for.

Digging down the nominations

You can find some interesting stuff when you dig down into the Oscar Nominations list.

The best foreign language film is always intriguing, as this is the short list drawn from films officially nominated to represent its home country. "Pan's Labyrinth" is Mexico's entry, even though it was made in Spain, as it is a Spanish-Mexican production. Spain's official entry "Volver" didn't make the cut, although Penelope Cruz is appropriately up for Best Actress.

The best foreign language category is also one of the few which is a preview. Deepa Metha's "Water" has been shown in the Twin Cities, but I believe it's coming back. We will soon get the German entry "The Live of Others" too.

The "Borat" situation bears some examination too. Having been shut out of the big awards, it is up for Best Adapted Screenplay. Given how much of "Borat" is improvised, you have to wonder how much of screenplay there was in the first place.

Anyway, make sure you listen into the Maven today as she appears on the Midday program with her Oscar thoughts.
