A spooky Tilly addendum for Hallowe'en

Posted at 2:00 PM on October 31, 2006 by Euan Kerr

Meg Tilly read a fairly long extract from her book "Gemma" when she came in yesterday. It's a harrowing account of a 12 year old girl locked in the trunk of a car by the pedophile who has just kidnapped her.

As she read, and the story got tougher and tougher, she got quieter and quieter. I began getting really worried that she the reading was getting to much for her and she was on the edge of breaking down.

Her voice trailed off as she finished the passage, and I sat with my eyes glued to her head, bowed over her book. I was thinking that we might have to stop the interview because she was overcome.

Then she sat up and beamed a completely unexpected happy smile at me.

And that, friends, is the difference between when an author, and an actor-turned-author, reads from her work.
