Movie Natters: July 14, 2006 Archive

Shorts

Man, it's going to be a good weekend for the movie theaters, as people hide from the heat. We have a 10 year old visitor coming to stay, and fortunately he's already seen "Pirates of the Caribbean II" so we'll have to find other fare.

I've lived in the midwest for 20 years on and off now, and it still feels unnatural to the Scotsman in me to step out of a building and have it warmer outside.

Talking of things to do here's a smattering of things which might catch your interest:

First of all the interview I mentioned earlier this week is now posted on MnArtists.org. I see I am credited with a big laugh. Must have been too close to the mike again.

Also the Walker launches the 30th season of Summer Music and Movies in Loring Park on Monday. You get a concert of great music followed by a classic movie after dusk. The series features classic screwball comedies of the 30's and 40's from the likes of Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, and George Cukor. Monday night's show features the work of Senegalese musician Daara J followed by the Sturges 1941 film "Sullivan's Travels." The entire series is free.

And finally I am wondering is anyone is as intrigued as I am by the trailer for the new "Miami Vice" film? Being old enough to remember the TV adventures of Crockett and Tubbs the grainy "Collateral" look to the thing seems Michael Mann is more interested in an homage to Jamie Foxx than Don Johnson. I am not upset.

A sneak peak

I am working on cutting up the Kevin Smith "Clerks II' interview for broadcast later in the week. I wanted to give a little sneak peak though and pulled this audio. Smith's movies are known for their outrageous content, but he is a thoughtful guy who is making movies for the people who don't see themselves in the usual Hollywood fare.

The second person you hear talking (other than my usual labored questions) is Trevor Fuhrman, the South St Paul lad who plays Elias, the born-again Lord of the Rings fan who has the misfortune to work in a fast food store with the "Clerks" anti-heroes Dante and Randall.

Enjoy.
