Newspapers: Too big (or important) to fail?

Posted at 9:45 AM on June 5, 2009 by Jeff Horwich

A recent op-ed in the Washington Post proposed something a little shocking to many folks: A federal "Journalism Recovery Act" full of copyright changes, regulatory relief, and tax breaks that would save the journalism industry (principally newspapers) from its financial slide into oblivion.

For the latest episode of the In The Loop podcast, I talked with attorney Bruce Brown (of the firm Baker Hostetler), one of the two authors of the piece. I especially wanted to dig into one of the most provocative ideas: That search engines be required to pay licensing fees for the pages (of news content) they index.

Here's the isolated interview (about six minutes long).

(This is just snippet of the full podcast, which is full of great interviews and music. Be sure to check out the whole show!)
