In the Loop

A new wook for our widget

For the past eight months or so, we've been using a tool called Sprout to package episodes of the show in a Flash-based widget. Pretty cool.

In our now all-digital world, we are sort of "episode-less." I think we'll still be collecting what we've been up to and packaging it up into a podcast. But there's also no reason to wait and put everything out in one chunk. We can release songs, interviews, humor bits, whatever -- much closer to real-time.

Hence the new approach to the Sprout widget. Rather than new widgets with each episode, there will essentially be just one, constantly changing and evolving with the new content we put in (and the old stuff we take out). The latest podcast will be there for listening at the bottom, but the bigger approach is a rotating set of segments that will change every time we've got something new to add.

This will take some time to refine, but here's Version 1.0:

WARNING/DISCLAIMER: I love Sprout. And I'd encourage anyone to check it out (I also used it to build slick musical home pages for myself and for The Smarts). But there are very shortly to convert to a paid model, with prices that are pretty steep for your typical tinkerer. Fortunately, our public radio show qualifies as a nonprofit, so we can keep using it for pretty cheap. Those music pages for the boys and me do not -- though I'm going to pay to keep them for now. Just be warned left you get deep into Sprout-fever right before they turn on the cash registers.
