How do you get viewers to tune in your station when there are countless other channels and web-streams out there?
A cheap gimmick of course!
And CNN found one of the most expensive cheap gimmicks around: 3-D holograms! Reporters like Jessica Yellin were beamed into the station's studio from remote locations.
Pretty neat technology, right? Experts say something like this could cost as much as $400,000 dollars to pull off. Except it turns out what you saw wasn't actually a hologram. Wolf Blitzer was not seeing a 3D version of Jessica Yellin . . . he was actually staring at a red dot on the floor. As Gearlog reports:
"There was no live, glowing, 3D picture that people could walk around. The "image" of Jessica Yellin and Wolf Blitzer standing in the same room existed only on TV screens."
So for now, no real holograms. Just Wolf Blitzer and some empty space. But there's always 2012, right?
