What's an Olympic gold medal really worth?

Posted at 2:52 PM on August 22, 2008 by Sanden Totten

One hundred and sixty bucks. That's roughly what you'd get if you melted down that first place medal to sell off the gold. The medals themselves only contain about 6 grams of real gold. But there's some silver in there too and even a little jade this year. The end result may not be your ticket to everlasting fortune, but they sure do look nice.

Of course, if you are really trying to cash in on your Olympic prize, why not try eBay? This silver medal from a member of the Cuban baseball team is selling for $9,100 right now. That's a pretty penny.

Of course, just winning one of these hunks of medal will earn you some cash. Different countries have their own price tag on bringing home the gold. In the U.S. it's a $25,000 dollar pay bump. That'll add some cha-ching to your Olympic bling. But really, who's in it for the money?

Money for medals, tension in Pakistan and waiting for a text from Obama

Unlike some people, we don't want to leave you hanging.

Here is the latest episode of The Week delivered on time, as promised. We ask a former Olympic swimmer about the days before athletes got paid. We get a diplomat's perspective on the conflict in Georgia. We find out how people in Pakistan are doing after their president stepped down. And we wait . . . and wait . . . and wait for a sign from Obama on his vice presidential pick. Anyday now, Barack, anyday.
