New dad: How often should I call home?

I'm back at work this week after being out for a while with my new son.
A boss looked over my cube on Monday morning, my first day back, and offered kind of a cryptic encounter.
Him: "Called home yet?"Me: "Sure thinking about it."
Him: "Don't."
End of conversation. Not sure what that means. (I did call home that afternoon. You can't really talk with a four-week-old, but it's fun to try.)
Whatever he meant (a joke, I figure? or not?) it's an eminently poll-able question.
