I thought I'd build on Sanden's recent blog post about the different categories of flip-flopping, from the nefarious to the noble.
I'm digging around, trying to suss out a real flip flopper from an accused flip flopper from someone who's just changed his or her mind, and I came across this video. It's the Mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders. Give it a listen. Make sure you have a tissue nearby.
Here we've got a Republican changing his position -- last minute -- in support of same-sex marriage, and he did it a day before formally kicking off his re-election campaign. Am I wrong, or does this seem rare?

Hi Larissa,
Great find on this video.
I was thinking about another nonpolitical flip flop that many people have in their lives and that is addiction and abstinence. When people are addicted and abusing a drug they essentially believe that they cannot live without the substance. When they abstain they believe that they cannot live with the substance. That would be one flip. If they go back and forth between abusing and abstaining then they are flip flopping.
