Bullies aren't just for kids

We've all got a story about bullying. And these stories have a way of sticking with us.

Sometimes, we hear about people confronting bullies, like the two high school seniors in Canada who drew international attention this fall for their pink shirt anti-bullying campaign.

But a whole high school student body wearing pink doesn't necessarily leave a lasting impression. Bullies just don't stop being bullies on graduation day. They grow up.

Now, they're at the office. A new survey conducted by Zogby says an estimated 54 million people have been bullied at work, and 72% of bullies are bosses.

In fact, if you look around, adult bullies are everywhere.

Besides running companies, they're other parents at public parks or customers in shopping malls.

They're online.

They're at family reunions.

They serve in government office.

Everyone has heard of a bully boss principal. Ebenezer Scrooge comes to mind.

Schools are rampant with it. Here's my story as a teacher.

The day she arrived she got in an argument with our much-loved After School Director. She felt he didn't have the educational level to run the program so she bullied him by cutting his hours so that he had to transfer to another school to support his family.

All seemed well otherwise until one day I had a free teaching period and happened to be in the hallway by the front office. I heard vicious screaming at students... blood curdling. Students were running away in all directions from the scene. The victim was a 12 year old boy standing frozen before her.

Within a year she felt threatened by the school newspaper and cancelled the award winning Journalism class and thus our school newspaper.

She ordered that the teacher birthday card list be cancelled which had teachers' addresses and phone numbers should we wish to contact each other or send Christmas cards or phone up.

Teachers began to transfer and retire at an alarming rate. Our after work get togethers ended because no one wanted to go if she attended, she found out she wasn't invited and was hurt.

Incompetence was obvious. Not even after a teacher died at school who'd been assigned a horrendous teaching assignment did the District take action. They blamed it on his long commute. To remove her would have been to accept responsibility. The union conducted a survey which revealed the lowest possible satisfaction rating. She's still there!

Complaints and grievances were filed to the Union. Yet even after 7 years of serial bullying of students and staff, this woman has managed to remain. She's been with the District for 35 years. No one wants to make the call that she has got to go! and she won't go. Her husband and son were convicted of insider trading with a $1+ million US government fine. She's got to pay it off.

And THIS is why our public schools are a mess. It's true. Throwing money at the schools won't help if we bury our heads in the sand about poor management. Blame the teachers? heck no. Blame the management.
