It's great to see the people who stay at Dorthy Day. I've slept there several times and discovered, like you did, there are some amazing people who are homeless. Some do not want help, but many would use programs that help them break the homelessness cycle. Several of the people that I met had great ideas about how this could be done.
If Governor Pawlenty can "request" one million dollar contributions from the largest businesses in the Twin Cities, then he should do the same and use the money to really solve this growing problem. If he wants to know how to do this, just ask a Dorothy Day regular.
