The other day I overheard one of my colleagues ask bewilderedly; "what's with all these talking cats on the Internet?"
There are some Internet trends I think we could all do without. But unfortunately, thanks to this global experiment in the democratization of information, there are some trends out there that we just have to deal with. The talking Internet cats my co-worker spoke of is one of them.
Lolcats is the phenomenon of people putting ultra cute captions under pictures of cats. It's a pretty simple idea but somehow has amounted to a movement. If you need a crash course in Lolcats, check out this slide show by the helpful folks at Slate Magazine. That should get you caught up.
My favorite line from the slide show is when the curator for a very popular lolcat site is asked why he thinks the trend has taken off and he verbally shrugs: "It's the Internet." Somehow the fancies of our own collective consciousness baffles us.
