In the old days protests were all about gathering a critical mass. When enough people were behind a cause they would hit the streets, catchy slogans and hand made signs in tow. Well, screw the head counts . . . we have entered into a new phase of citizen unrest. Protesters for hire.
A business in Germany has protesters who will support your cause for roughly 150 Euros per afternoon. Individual protesters are featured like classified ads. From the BBC article: "Next to a black and white posed picture, Melanie lists her details from her jeans size to her shoe size and tells potential protest organizers that she is willing to be deployed up to 100km around Berlin."
Similar tactics have been deployed for viral marketing campaigns where young hip people are paid to casually talk up products or services at bars and parties. Even Bloggers can cash in. But something about paying for a protest seems like a new level of hyper-reality. Will protests become the new face of lobbying?
