More fun in the dark!

Today is the celebration of Saint Lucia, a sort of welcoming back of the light for Scandinavian cultures (light up there is a scarce commodity this time of year). But here in the Loophole we're still thinking about darkness.

So, what traditions do we have to celebrate the dark? Well, you can read up on Tenebrae. A Christian celebration held the week before Easter. During the service lights are gradually dimmed and the church ultimately ends in darkness as the congregates leave in silent reflection.

A few years back, the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program held a show of local artists Mike Lynch and Chris Faust called simply, "Night". Both artists like to capture the subtle tones of darkness. Check it out.

In black silence, the sound of each breath spent
Marks time, a pendulum of malcontent
The ailing brain, racked with its concerns
The candle long out, the mind brightly burns

leaping from the dark of night
another shin slain
