Custody battle

Posted at 2:20 PM on March 6, 2007 by Bob Collins

Over the years, on those occasions when people speak up about what issues they'd like newsrooms to cover, parental rights (specifically the rights of fathers) surfaces. Rarely do those stories get done.

Among the bills filed today in the Senate is one that, I think, probably has a good story behind it. SF1606, filed by Sen. Tom Neuville, R-Northfield, instructs courts in Minnesota that there is "a rebuttable presumption that joint legal and physical custody is in the best interests of the child." There are, of course, provisions in cases where domestic abuse is alleged.

I don't know what the prospects for the bill are, but it's another one that, I think, would yield an interesting committ hearing.

There's a story behind every bill, and I suspect an issue worth exploring.
