Free agent Friday

Posted at 2:39 AM on January 19, 2007 by Bob Collins (3 Comments)

This being Friday and all, the deadline for submitting a claim on a free agent is 5 p.m. And, man, are there ever some good free agents in the pool. On the navigation side of the main MFL page you'll find links for the "waiver pool" in each league. Also please remember to fill out the claim form (a link for which is also on the main page), making sure you keep at least two members of every party on the squad.

There were lots of points awarded yesterday. See the play-by-play page for what happened. There's a chance some of the bills that were heard in some committees passed yesterday, although as of last night, the data wasn't available. If it is today, those points will be assigned.

Otherwise, Friday looks like a quiet day with no floor sessions in either the House or Senate. The Senate has no committee schedule today and none of the House committees that are meeting are discussing individual bills.

So who struck it big in the free agent market last week? In the Maroon League, Reps. Margaret Kelliher and Al Doty each delivered 24 points this week for their new squads. Jim Davnie chipped in 23 for his.

In the Gold League, the pick-up of the week was Rep. Debra Hilstrom, who tallied 34 points for the Minnetonka Redress. Manager George Linkert looked ahead at the committee schedule, figured some of Hilstrom's bills were to be heard and gambled for a short-term gain that paid off handsomely.

By the way, every lawmaker but one has tallied a point this year. Rep. Mary Liz Holberg has gotten shutout so far. But it's obviously early.

Update 12:01 p.m. -- The House Information Office has posted this week's Session Weekly. While the entire issue is always outstanding, I recommend the "How a Bill Becomes Law in Minnesota" article for MFL fans.

Yeah... the comparison to fantasy football becomes less and less true as we play this game. The fact that I could anticipate Hilstrom getting these points, while fun, didn't seem quite fair. Though I suppose the information is out there, for anyone to take if they are willing to dig for it.

You could never know a players points beforehand like this in fantasy football.

Oh, George, I don't think that's true at all. I think teams do adjust their strategy to the opponent of the week. The Patriots, I think, fairly figure dout that they needed a deep threat for the late part of thier schedule and playoffs (whee run defenses stiffen). Ta da! Jabbar Gaffney gets signed.

and I noticed an NHL team last week -- I can't remember which one -- brought one of their goons up just to play the Wild, because Minnesota had one.

Good scouting!
