That was Newsweek's order to America two and a half years ago. If we didn't get out and spend, spend, spend we'd kill the economy. The magazine made retail spending feel almost like a patriotic duty.
That essay came to mind again Monday as we read about some retail employees protesting the push to open stores at midnight after Thanksgiving.
We're in this weird economic time where if you have a job, your economy is improving and you're spending money again. The chart below shows retail spending has recovered mostly from the recession.
We'll look today at some of the social and economic issues around shopping and Black Friday. We'll be doing some reporting and looking for your insights. Join in.
