There's no consensus on when the shopping expression "Black Friday" was born. The most popular origin story goes back to a 1982 ABC News story.
There's no question, however, that the shopping push that starts just after midnight Thursday and runs through the end of the year is absolutely vital to the nation's retailing business.
About three of every four annual holiday shopping dollars will be spent in the next month.
