Who's winning the GOP nominee social media race?

If Twitter followers represented the voting public, Newt Gingrich would have the Republican presidential nomination in the bag. And if the electoral college were plugged into online buzz, you might be waving to President Ron Paul.

It's easy enough to laugh off this kind of data, except it's the kind of activity that helped elect Barack Obama president. Three years later, social media is even more crucial to candidates and their messages.

The Daily Beast today has a cool graphic on Republican contenders for the presidential nomination, showing Facebook and Twitter activity.


UPDATE: Another review of social media and the GOP candidates finds that Michele Bachmann has the most active Facebook fans.
